President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Spring is off to a cold and wet start, but I know it won’t take long for the weather to turn the corner and for patio and golf season to be in full swing.

April promises to be a busy month for the Club.

On Monday, April 11th at 6:00 p.m., the Board of Directors will be hosting a member information session at the Club. We plan to provide an overview of the member survey results, a finance update, and updates related to the future. It was clear from the member survey that members have a desire for different forms of communication other than email and notices – this information session is our first attempt to address that desire. Please click here to register – the meeting will take place in person, but a virtual option is also available.

In addition to the scheduled Member Information Session, we will be conducting our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, April 27th at 6:00 p.m. Similar to the Member Information Session, the AGM will take place in person but will also have a virtual option available. Please expect the full AGM Package to be sent to the membership on Tuesday, April 12th, 2022.

Beyond the meetings in April, we have the return of many traditional golf, tennis, and dining events, course aeration (Monday, April 18th to Friday, April 22nd), a menu update in F&B, and much more. Please continue to monitor communications from the Club to stay up to date.

In the previous section of the Green, you may have noticed an intake of new golf category members this month – please join me in welcoming all of them to the Club. As part of the membership acceptance guidelines developed in 2020, this is the only planned intake of Golfing members for 2022, and each of these new golf category members will be subject to a maximum of 25 rounds for each of their first two years at the Club. The rounds played maximum is a mechanism that allows us to better control access to the tee yet still allow great candidates for membership to join the Club. As we have done throughout the pandemic, we will continue to monitor access to the tee on a frequent basis and consider appropriate adjustments accordingly.

Be well and be safe,

Respectfully submitted,

Gord Chan

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello members,

As I write this note, the Masters has just started, and we have just completed two fantastic events to kick off the year: the Cold Duck and Masters Par 3. For the Cold Duck, to be able to host a full event with guests, dinner, and prizes was fantastic. It was also fantastic to see the club humming at full capacity. With the great weather and the cherry blossoms, the Masters Par 3 felt as close to Augusta as you can get on the West Coast.

Needless to say, the golf season is here, and based on the early events, this is going to be a spectacular year.

On April 20th, during aeration, Chinami Hancock, Ken Woods and Andy Robb will be hosting a rules seminar for the members. This will be outdoors and will include some refreshments afterwards. It is going to be interactive and social, so please attend if you would like a refresher on the modernized 2019 rules of golf.

We saw tremendous support for all events last year and we anticipate the same appetite for competition in 2022—so be sure to sign up early for all events when they are posted.

Please note the following key dates:

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear members,

Welcome to April and to the official start of the 2022 Women’s Golf Season!

You should each have received a copy (via email) of the season calendar of golf events. This year, all events are open for registration four weeks prior to the day of play. As of April 1st, all members who plan to play in any of the competitive events this season will need to start posting scores.

If you’ve never participated in the seasonal eclectic competition, this is a good year to start. The eclectic scorecard keeps a record of your best score on every hole on the course throughout the year. We have updated the format to make it easier and more visible to all. Our Golf Shop has developed a program so that we can enter scores in a digital format after each round. We will post results in the locker room and update it biweekly in order to add more visibility and excitement. You do not have to be a low handicapper to participate!

All of us can use a brush up on the rules from time to time. Ashley and Michelle will be sharing a weekly video with the rule of the week explained; this will be a fantastic help. In addition, Chinami Hancock and Susan Russell, with the help of Ken Woods and Andy Robb, have organized a rules clinic for Wednesday, April 20th. This clinic was a great success last year. This year it will be a mixed event. Click here to register. We will follow the practical part of the clinic with a happy hour in the Garden Lounge.

Our Spring Meeting for all lady golfers is set for Monday, April 25th. For the first time in two years, this will be an in-person meeting. We have a wonderful guest speaker scheduled to present at that time. Joy Jennissen of the Jennissen Group (www.thejennissengroup.com) will join Dr. Diane McIntosh for a fireside chat addressing “Kindness in a Post Covid world”. We think that all of you will find it interesting and relevant. This is also your opportunity to learn first-hand about all of the plans for the season and to ask any questions that you may have. Click here to register.

Following immediately on the heels of the Spring Meeting we will kick off the season of play with Opening Day on Tuesday, April 26th. Ashley and Michelle have taken this event on and we are looking forward to seeing what they have organized this year. It’s a surprise!! Click here to register.

Business Women season kicks off on Saturday, April 30th; click here to register.

From April 30th to May 13th, we will have the qualifying period to seed the top 32 teams to compete in the Mixed Championship. You have one chance to submit your qualifying score. Teams must check in with the Golf Shop prior to the qualifying round and have their scorecard attested. The format for the Mixed Championship Qualifying is net best ball. Men will play off the white tees and women off the red tees.

Dates to take note of for May:

Tuesday, May 3rd: Beatrice Evans (qualifier for the Capilano Exchange) & Casual

Tuesday, May 10th: First day of Interclub Team Play (for those not playing in Team Interclub, this will be a casual play day)

Tuesday, May 17th: Casual golf for all

Tuesday, May 24th: Team Interclub & Casual

Tuesday, May 31st: Four Club Challenge & Casual

Lastly, as you pass through the Golf Shop or Locker Room or interact with the Back Shop staff, please take a minute to thank them for helping make Shaughnessy a special place. It has been a tough two years for all of the staff dealing with less-than-ideal conditions.

Golf Report

Dear members,

Over the course of this past winter, we have been looking for ways to improve the member experience when it comes to using the tee sheet. Throughout the busy last two seasons, we have seen a number of limitations and challenges with our current tee sheet system that is run through Jonas.

These challenges include:

  • Tee time additions/deletions not being updated to the member tee sheet in a timely fashion.
  • Members accidentally cancelling their entire group instead of just removing themselves
  • A lack of customization for member messaging and menu options
  • Ineffective 9-hole option
  • No real-time integration with Golf Canada for handicapping purposes

In an effort to improve the member experience, we will be making a change in tee sheet software to GGGolf. GGGolf works with over 160 private and semi-private clubs in Canada, including Royal Montreal, Royal Colwood, and Royal Ottawa.

Some of the benefits of GGGolf include:

  • Real-time integration with Golf Canada (handicapping) and Golf Genius (our event software)
  • A more user-friendly interface for members and staff
  • More flexibility to edit and manage tee sheets
  • The ability to recreate our lottery settings from Jonas

We are hoping to launch the new GGGolf tee sheet to the membership in the next month. Members will receive advance notice and instruction will be provided to make it a smooth transition.

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Daylight Savings, fresh-cut grass, and the smell of flora around the club are what we can all agree remind us that spring is upon us. For our Food & Beverage Department, we would also add the power washing of our patios and outdoor tennis courts, reservations for Easter, and the opening of the halfway house to that list.

Our Food & Beverage Team has been working in the background towards increasing our menu offerings at the Halfway House and on our new Spring Menu. Come try new favourites on our Spring Menu including a Smoked Salmon Benedict, Breakfast Quesadilla, Ahi Tuna Wonton Tacos, Crab Spaghettini and more. There is also the return of beloved dishes with a selection of Shaughnessy classics.

Our menus at Shaughnessy start with Executive Chef James’ vision of fresh, local cuisine from sustainable sources. In the past several months, he has been able to secure partnerships with local producers and farmers. His work has spoken for itself by continuing to showcase cuisine with a west coast influence that is as unmatched as it is spectacular.

We have all been witnessing the rising price of food since the start of the pandemic. For us, food costs have spiked by 30% to 40% over the last three years and it’s certainly likely that these trends will continue. Our Food & Beverage team have been working hard since the hiring of our Executive Chef James Choi to improve efficiencies, save costs and reduce the impact on our menu prices. That said, you will notice small increases to menu prices this month.

If you haven’t done so already, come try our seasonal features. Until the end of April, try an Avocado Toast Salad with sourdough, heirloom tomatoes, gourmet greens, and a balsamic reduction or try Ginger Soy Chicken stir-fry with bell peppers, red onions, and crispy shallots.

Please join us for the launch of our new wine menu on Friday, April 8th. There will be select tastings of some of the new wines from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Garden Lounge. The sale will feature a variety of discounted wines and ready-to-drink cans and will run through the weekend. Wines purchased at the sale can be consumed while dining; a standard corkage fee applies.

Although we are moving further into spring, the dining areas will continue to be closed on Mondays until staffing levels improve. Fortunately, we have been blessed with great hires recently and look forward to full weeks of service soon. The Halfway House will be open on Mondays to service the gap of our Monday closures.

Upcoming Dining Events

There are still a few spots open for Easter Dinner on Sunday, April 17th. Click here to make a reservation.

Starting on Thursday, April 28th, our Prime Rib Night will move back to buffet-style.

Keep an eye on our eNews for Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner reservations for Sunday, May 8th.

2023 CP WOMEN’S OPEN

Dear Shaughnessy Members,

Golf Canada and CP are excited for the return of the CP Women’s Open to Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club from August 21st – 27th in 2023! After two years of extensive planning by all parties including Golf Canada, CP, Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club and its members, we are excited to bring the CP Women’s Open in its entirety back to the Vancouver area in 2023.

As we kick off our planning, please look out for more information throughout 2022 including new and exciting initiatives and volunteer opportunities at the CP Women’s Open.

We’re thrilled to bring Canada’s National Championship to the Vancouver area and look forward to continuing the legacy of community generosity. In 2021, CP announced a donation of $2.8 million from fundraising efforts, including the 650 volunteers and Shaughnessy member donations surrounding the CP Women’s Open in support of the BC Children’s Hospital with an additional donation of over $500,000 for Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital. This is an incredible accomplishment, considering these funds were raised through two postponements of the CP Women’s Open and that we can expect further donations of support when the CP Women’s Open returns to Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in 2023! We certainly hope you all return to volunteer!

For anyone interested, please make sure to follow the 2022 CP Women’s Open as we return to Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club as there will be exciting new initiatives and ‘must visit destinations’ that we look forward to implementing in 2023 as well!

The target date to launch volunteer registration for the 2023 CP Women’s Open is June 27th, 2022.

Should you have any questions regarding the 2023 CP Women’s Open, please contact us: cpwomensopen@golfcanada.ca.
