Online Dining Reservations with OpenTable Coming Soon

We are excited to announce that we will be partnering with OpenTable to streamline our dining reservation process, providing a more convenient and personalized experience for our members.

Starting April 15th, you will be able to make dining reservations through OpenTable, which offers a user-friendly interface that will be exclusive to Shaughnessy members only. We will be able to securely store your dining preferences, allergies, and other relevant information, allowing us to offer a more tailored dining experience for you and your guests.

On April 15th, we will be sending out instructions on how to create an account and make a reservation using OpenTable, with the goal of having a seamless transition to this new system.

Spring Aeration

Spring aeration starts Monday, April 24th and continues through Friday, April 28th. During this time, the Driving Range, Golf Shop, Halfway House, Jack’s First Tee Lounge, Golf Practice Areas, Dining Areas and Golf Course will be closed. Please note that a Back Shop attendant will be available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from Monday, April 24th to Friday, April 28th.

Please note that tennis will remain open during this entire period.

Upcoming Dining Areas Closures

The Dining Areas will be closed all day on Sunday, April 9th for the Easter events. The Halfway House will still be open.

The Dining Areas including the Halfway House and Jack’s First Tee Lounge will be closed for the duration of Spring Aeration (Monday, April 24th through Friday, April 28th).

President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Spring has certainly been off to a cold start, but I know it won’t take long for the weather to turn the corner and soon we will be back enjoying the patios, outdoor tennis and golf course for another amazing season.

A friendly reminder that on Wednesday, April 19th at 6:00 PM, the Board of Directors will host the Annual General Meeting (AGM). After the formal proceedings of the AGM, we will provide an update on the course, membership, finance, strategic planning, and the CP Women’s Open. The meeting will take place in person, but a virtual option will also be available. Please click here to register in advance to attend in person or virtually and be a part of the evening.

As always, April promises to be a busy month for the Club. We typically see many of our active members return from being south for the winter, and along with the promise of better weather, our operations ramp up for golf, tennis, and dining in particular. Recently, new spring-inspired menu items were added to the dining menus and the Halfway House reopened for the season. We have even more planned for this month, including the launch of a new online dining reservations system, a CP Women’s Open information session, Spring Aeration (April 24-28) and carpet replacements, to name a few, and I encourage all of you to continue to monitor communications from the Club to stay up to date.

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello fellow members,

Recently, I have received an unusual amount of member complaints, and they have all been about the weather. At the time of this writing, and having just come off our first event of the year, we are already thinking of renaming The Cold Duck to The Frozen Duck (which is actually one of the prizes). As your Captain, I apologize for this poor start and can promise everyone that no umbrellas will be needed for the rest of the season. If you’re feeling affected by the weather, I highly recommend watching the Full Shaughnessy video to help get you hyped!

Winter is over and registration is now open for the Cufflinks and Fourball, Mixed Match Play, and Father/Son season-long brackets. One notable change this year is that there will be no qualifier for Fourball as there will be an additional 16 new spots for the top low combined teams which play in Cufflinks. Since we are now in active posting season, please remember to post all of your scores if you wish to play in competitive club golf events.

On Wednesday, April 26th, during aeration, there will be a rules seminar for the members. This will be held outdoors and may include some improv with some of your favourite Shaughnessy actors. It will be a social event with refreshments afterwards; however, there will be a test in order to enjoy the après. Please attend if you would like a refresher on the modernized rules of golf and how you can call an infraction on your Saturday morning playing partner.

We saw tremendous support for all events last year, and we anticipate the same appetite for competition in 2023—so be sure to sign up early for all events when they are open for registration.

Please note the following key dates:

Friday, April 21st – Captains’ Classic [Mixed]

Wednesday, April 26th – Rules Seminar [Mixed]

SPRING AERATION – Monday, April 24th to Friday, April 28th

Wednesday, May 3rd – Senior Mixer Opening

Wednesday, May 3rd – Men’s Night Opening

Saturday / Sunday, June 3rd & 4th – Gold Cup

Saturday, June 17th – Demo Day Gala

Thursday, June 22nd – The Vintage

Friday, July 14th – Member/Member

Tuesday, July 18th – Past Presidents [Invite-Only]

Thursday, August 3rd – The Legends

Saturday, August 12th & Sunday, August 13th – Club Championships Weekend

COURSE CLOSURE – CP WOMEN’S OPEN – August 19th – August 29th

Wednesday, September 6th – Senior Mixer Finale

Saturday, September 9th – Round Up

Wednesday, September 13th – Men’s Night Finale

FALL AERATION – Monday, September 18th to Friday, September 22nd

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Welcome to the 2023 Shaughnessy Women’s Program

The season is fast approaching and I am getting very excited.

The Season’s Calendar is on the bulletin board. Please look over the calendar and populate your calendar with your favourite events.

I hope you can attend the Spring Meeting at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 18th where we will reveal the survey results and announce the second charity recipient. You should have received the survey invite on April 6th. We will also talk about this year’s program in detail and present a budget that supports all events.

I would like to highlight one event here: the Victoria Exchange on Tuesday, June 13th in Victoria. How do you qualify? Any time between May 6th and May 20th. Go into the Golf Shop prior to your round and let the staff know that you are hoping to qualify for the Victoria Exchange. Ask one of your playing partners to be your marker and hand in your scorecard to the Golf Shop at the end of your round. The 16 best net scores will qualify, along with the Captain and Vice-Captain. The team will be announced on May 21st, along with lodging and travel details. Ashley Zibrik and Michelle Waters will also be joining us. A discounted rate has been secured for rooms at the Oak Bay Hotel for the participants. It should be a super fun event, so please take the time to qualify if you are interested.

Post-Covid we are finally utilizing our wonderful new locker room. There are two bulletin boards in the locker room. One board will post notices regarding Women’s Golf Committee related business. Current examples are the Women’s Golf Committee Terms of Reference, the Fall Meeting Minutes from 2022, and the 2023 budget. The second, bigger board will contain lots of information about the golf program, eclectic results and other interesting golf news.

There is also a library in the locker room, and it seems that there are currently many books out on loan. Hopefully this is because our lady golfers haven’t yet returned to play. This library works on the honour system. Please return borrowed books once you have read them and see if you have any new and suitable books to donate.

I hope everyone feels free to contact me with any questions or suggestions regarding this year’s program. We may not be able to make a change for 2023 but your ideas may be incorporated in 2024.

I hope to see you all on Tuesday, April 18th at 2:00 PM for the Spring Meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Leslie Cliff

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Golf Canada has announced the launch of The National Golf League (NGL). Built for golfers of all skill levels, the National Golf League will feature a six-week regular season that takes place within existing recreational league play during the summer. A series of regional playoff tournaments across Canada will take place in the fall at premium golf courses. The National Golf League will culminate with the NGL National Championship at Hamilton Golf and Country Club as part of the 2024 RBC Canadian Open tournament week celebration.

The National Golf League will also contribute to the development of a more sustainable and inclusive future for the sport by supporting a charitable component through First Tee – Canada. First Tee is a youth development program that provides accessible pathways to golf participation at schools, community centres, and golf courses across the country.

National Golf League competitions will utilize an official Golf Canada Handicap applied towards a net Stableford scoring system that allows golfers to earn points for the net score they record on each hole.

Regular season NGL competition will take place over nine holes during six weeks of identified league play called “NGL Majors” that are integrated into existing league play and scheduled at the convenience of the local league operator. A golfer’s best four net Stableford point totals of the six NGL Majors will count towards their season-long points total on the NGL leaderboard.

A portion of the top regular season finishers in each participating league will qualify for the NGL Regional Playoffs, which will take place at premium courses across Canada. Qualifying golfers will select a guest teammate who also played in their regular season league and participate as a team of two in a best-ball net Stableford competition over 18 holes. Successful teams in the NGL Regional Playoffs will earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the NGL National Championship.

The NGL is open to recreational golf leagues played at both private and public courses. Participants must be Golf Canada members to ensure an official handicap is used.

There is no registration fee for golfers to participate in the NGL. However, in the launch year of NGL, there is an expected donation of $50 from each participating player to directly support First Tee within their province. All donated funds will stay within the provincial First Tee chapter and will be used to introduce traditionally underrepresented youth to the sport of golf and its inherent life lessons. Tax receipts will be provided to individual golfers upon request.

The size of the National Golf League will be limited in its launch year to ensure a positive experience for players and league operators. A limited number of spots remain for leagues to join the National Golf League in 2023.

Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club will be one of the clubs in Canada that will be able to participate in the launch year. Members will not be required to “register”, you will simply need to submit an attested scorecard to the Golf Shop if you choose to participate. The Golf Shop will register you and add your score into Golf Genius. Below are the six dates that you should note to submit a score if you would like to participate:

Saturday, May 27th
Saturday, June 10th
Saturday, June 24th
Saturday, July 8th
Saturday, July 22nd

Dear Shaughnessy members,

It’s hard to believe that it’s spring already. Before we know it, summer will be here and we have a lot of great events planned for you!

We are most certainly in a different place this year than we were in 2022, with the unknowns of the pandemic restrictions. This year, our team has been working hard on the 2023 calendar, booking for both member events and private events. As you can imagine, CP Women’s Open planning for August has been in full force! Our team is looking forward to hosting tournament guests at this beautiful club and providing them with the Shaughnessy experience.

Over the next several months, there are exciting member events, both with the return of traditional events and a few new events.

On Saturday, April 22nd, we are hosting our first Spring High Tea event. This is an extension of our Christmas High Tea event with a seasonal twist. The event will feature delectable delights from Shaughnessy’s culinary team, a selection of loose-leaf teas from Rishi, live piano music, and feature spring cocktails. Registration remains open for this event until April 20th. Please click here to register for the Spring High Tea event.

In the next few months, we will have more information to share with you regarding the below events. Please keep an eye out for emails from Shaughnessy.
