GM’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

It is hard to believe that we are only a few days away from the always much anticipated Masters week. The spring weather continues to improve and, of course, tee time and court bookings continue to increase as we head into the middle of spring.

I’d like to start by providing a few important updates and commendable achievements within our club. First and foremost, please take a moment to read through Andrew’s detailed report on the progress of our greens. Their recovery from the late-winter’s crown hydration event is crucial for our upcoming season and Andrew’s insights provide a comprehensive overview of where we stand and our expectations moving forward.

Additionally, I want to remind everyone that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on the horizon and will take place in the Cypress Room at 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 25th. Similar to recent years, the meeting will be held in person, with a Zoom option (including voting for eligible members) for those who cannot make it in person – we hope you will be able to join us. This year’s version of the AGM will not only look back at 2023 but also include information about the current state of the Club. Please note that the AGM materials will be sent to members on April 11th.

On a note of pride, our club and several team members have recently been recognized for outstanding contributions and excellence. Andrew Hart was recently recognized with the Course Superintendent of the Year Award for 2023 by 59club Canada. This merit-based award stems from experience tests that are conducted multiple times a year at many of the top clubs in Canada. It is truly a testament to his hard work and expertise, and that of the rest of his team including the Course and Grounds Committee.

Furthermore, our 2023 Summer Party: A Night in Vegas has propelled us to finalist status in the Canadian Event Awards for the best event by an in-house team alongside notable organizations such as Molson Coors and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Congratulations to Piril Erbakan, our House and Social Committee, and all the staff and members involved for this remarkable achievement.

Following last year’s successful collaboration with BMW Canada which augmented a few of our club-sponsored events, we are thrilled to announce a new “Drive it Home” experience starting in May. This unique opportunity will allow members to test drive BMW’s premier vehicles for up to three days. We look forward to sharing more details about this member benefit by the end of the month.

As we move into peak season for Golf, Outdoor Tennis and Dining, we encourage all of you to continue to stay informed about updates and events by reviewing our communications through all of our channels.

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

After a great Easter weekend, golf season feels like it has arrived! I just wanted to remind members of the following restrictions and changes that kick back in as of April 1st:

1. Golf Guest Policy

Until the end of September, a three-to-one (3:1) guest-to-member ratio will only be permitted on Mondays and Tuesdays. A one-to-one (1:1) guest-to-member ratio will be permitted from Wednesday to Sunday, after 10:00 AM, with the exception of Wednesday morning prior to Men’s Night. However, members may bring three (3) guests per member any day after 10:00 AM if those guests are immediate family members of the hosting member (spouses, children (either natural or adopted) and their spouses, parents, siblings, and grandchildren). If two members were to sign up two guests outside of a Monday, and one member cancels, the second guest will be subject to a guest rate of $395. Please note that groups composed of only members will continue to have priority in the lottery. Please click here for the full list of guest fees.

2. Academy bookings

The Academy will now be used for fittings and lessons and will resume member bookings following the season (starting October 1st).

3. Junior Golf

Juniors may play as regular Members with the following restrictions in effect from April 1st through September 30th:

  • On Monday and Tuesday, must play after 3:00 PM.;
  • On Wednesday, must play before 8:00 AM and after 4:00 PM or at the conclusion of Men’s Night tee times, whichever is later;
  • On Thursday, Friday, and Sunday (including Holidays), must play before 8:00 AM and after 3:00 PM;
  • Saturday, must play after 2:00 PM;
  • Junior Members with a 10 handicap or less may be permitted to play in restricted hours if accompanied by an adult golfing Member. If the traffic on the course dictates, the Director of Golf may use their discretion and waive the above rules.
  • All Junior Members must adhere to the Club Rules;
  • All Junior Members are able to book tee times by telephone, online or in person, after 12:00 PM on the day prior to the day of play, and are subject to Junior playing time restrictions;
  • Children and grandchildren of golf category Members that are not yet eligible to become junior Members (under the age of ten (10),) are permitted to use the golf course after 6:00 PM no more than twice a month provided they are supervised by an adult Member at all times.

4. Driving Range Hours of Operation

The practice facility opens thirty (30) minutes prior to the first daily tee time, throughout the season. The driving range closes one (1) hour prior to sunset daily throughout the calendar year. The driving range closes at 5:00 PM on Sundays for weekly maintenance. During weeks including a holiday Monday, the range will close at 5:00 PM on that Monday and not on Sunday. We recommend calling the Golf Shop at 604.266.6248 to confirm that the Driving Range is open on days when the Golf Course may be closed due to weather.

Our Golf Shop and Back Shop team are excited for tournament season to begin with the Masters Par 3 leading the way on Wednesday, April 10th!

Course & Grounds Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

With peak golfing season just around the corner, I felt that it was important to provide an update on the four damaged greens on course.

The course team has been hard at work, diligently repairing the affected areas. As of April 1st, the projected growth potential has been averaging between 10-15%, making it challenging to use growth as the driving factor for recovery. To expedite the repair process, we’ve employed the use of plugs and sod sourced from the chipping green. While repairing the damaged areas, we’ve worked on lowering the collar dams (a portion where the immediate boarding turf has become higher than the green, preventing surface runoff) at the front of the greens to mitigate moisture retention during rainy periods, thus reducing the risk of future crown hydration occurrences.

Moving forward into April, you’ll notice the covers being removed more frequently as we continue our cultural practices on the damaged greens. As you see the greens without their covers, some may appear ready for play; however, many plants are still in a juvenile stage. The sod and plugs require further growth and attention before reintroducing traffic.

We’re encouraged by the progress thus far and remain optimistic about the coming weeks. As long as the weather continues to improve, our aim is to re-open the damaged greens by Friday, April 26th. We would then expect optimal conditions in the weeks following. Your continued patience and support are greatly appreciated as we work towards this goal.

Thank you for your understanding.

    Retail Report

    Dear Shaughnessy members,

    With the Masters right around the corner, the Golf Shop is in full swing with plenty of new arrivals arriving in the shop daily. An exciting new brand you will see on our featured table will be the Limited Edition Malbon Golf Masters product for lifestyle wear. Malbon is inspired by the game of golf and was founded in 2017 by culture and golf enthusiasts Stephen and Erica Malbon. Malbon Golf is a lifestyle brand inspired by the game of golf. They provide quality products, tell stories, and invite customers to take part in the community of like-minded thinkers that they have created. The brand has quickly gained broad popularity and recognition amongst creative, stylish, and active people due to its unmistakable branding and playful curation, most recently you have seen Malbon Golf on the likes of Jason Day, Charley Hull, Jeongeun Lee (Lee6), & Jesper Parnevik. The brand is fueled by meticulous and tasteful customers who have a passion for golf as well as expressing themselves through what they wear. I will be targeting some other product drops from this brand and will bring other limited drops throughout the season when available.

    Stay tuned in to your emails on our upcoming Masters Golf Pool put on by the Golf Shop to win some prized Golf Shop credit. Lastly, I wanted to highlight our upcoming Ladies Trunk Show once more as it will be a marquee event for the ladies where we will have product from a brand new company called ANEW available for special order. We will also have representatives from Swing Control, IbKul, Daily, Skechers, and Therabody.
