General Manager’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

What a difference a year makes! As we hit the final stretch of the summer season, we are certainly seeing better access to the course and courts for our members. On the golf side, we have seen several consecutive months of rounds played totals comparable to pre-pandemic times. It is an important trend that the Club continues to monitor that will help in making better-informed decisions on certain policies such as the new member acceptance and guest play.

We recently came out of a heat wave period that required constant adjustments to maintenance practices in order to safeguard the course from the stress of the heat while keeping the course in outstanding condition. A big thank you to Andrew Hart and his team for all of their hard work during this challenging period. I would also like to thank all of our employees, particularly those that have had to brave the heat and work outdoors in recent weeks – it shows a strong commitment to the member experience, and I know it is much appreciated by all.

Volunteer registration for the much-awaited 2023 CP Women’s Open, to be held August 21-27, 2023, is now open exclusively for Shaughnessy members. Please click here to register and make sure that you select “Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club Member” when prompted. Should you require assistance with signing up, please visit the Administration Office, and we would be happy to assist you through the online registration.

Please mark your calendars for the return of our Annual Summer Party on Friday, August 12th. The Enchanted Garden-themed event is one you can’t miss, and I encourage you to attend and consider bringing guests to the biggest event of the year. Please click here to sign up.

The Board of Directors recently passed a Social Media and Content Creation Policy. The policy along with the complete Club Rules and Information Booklet can be found by clicking here.

In other news, Thomas Wang, our controller, will be leaving his position at the Club in pursuit of a career in ERP implementation. Many of you have crossed paths with Thomas, particularly as it relates to member accounts. We are currently in the midst of recruiting his replacement, and we will notify the membership once we have filled this important position. Thomas’ last day will be August 12th, 2022 – we wish him and his family all the best in the future. He will be missed.

Please enjoy the rest of the summer season!

Respectfully submitted,

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello members,

With the hot weather, the golf course is firm, dry, and very fast, which is a welcome change. I, for one, have been enjoying hitting my longest drives of the year off of the firm fairways.

We had some really fun events this month with the Member Guest and our Captains’ Classic. I want to thank everyone who participated and, of course, the golf staff and grounds crew.

Competitive Matches should be well underway with their conclusion on Champions weekend, August 21st. I would encourage everyone to come out and watch their fellow members compete and enjoy a great day out at the club.

Lastly, please rake the bunkers after hitting into them – I have noticed far too many footprints and untamed bunkers than should happen, especially with the matches we have going on at the club right now.

Respectfully submitted,

Fraser McKeen

Dear members,

July was a very busy month at SGCC!  We started Tuesday golf in July with an interclub competition and finished with the final interclub of the season. We owe Kathy Forrest and Virginia Lam a huge thanks for coordinating this year.

Our Senior Club Championship, held on July 12, was a spectacular day. The weather could not have been nicer. The 20 ladies who participated in the event and the casual golfers that day all enjoyed a lovely post-game lunch on the patio. Holly Horwood took first place in both the 60+ group to win the Ernest Evans trophy and the 70+ category (Kay Meekison trophy) with her round of 82.  Anne Mohammed took home the Ruth Harris trophy with her best in Vintage category score of 92.

The 36th annual Shaughnessy Ladies Charity in support of Kate Booth House saw a nearly sold-out crowd, a great day of golf, lots of sunshine and a wonderful dinner. The Charity was chaired by Jane Macgregor.  This was the sixth year that Jane has volunteered for this event, and we owe her a heartfelt thank you. Her attention to detail has made for a beautiful event year after year.  Nina Henriksen has worked on the charity in one capacity or another for eight consecutive years. This year she spearheaded the silent auction, and her efforts, along with that of our dynamo fundraisers Leslie Cliff, Diane Fulton and Penny Crosby, netted close to $170,000.  And of course, the success of the event owes a huge thanks to the Food and Beverage team, Piril, and the professional staff who exceeded expectations at every turn.  Thank you also to all the members and guests who supported this very worthy cause.

Sincere congratulations to Mens Captain McKeen, who led his team to a 14-10 win against Womens Team Naylor in the Captains’ Classic held Thursday, July 21st.

With the organized golf season 75% complete, there are some key events to look forward to that you won’t want to miss:

  • Grans and non-Grans tee it up on August 9th for this much-loved event.
  • Qualifying Round for Club Championship takes place on August 16th with one round of stroke play to determine brackets. Players will then compete in single-round eliminations on Thursday and Friday. The final matches will be held on Sunday, August 21st. Winners of each flight will be presented on the patio with appetizers and drinks compliments of Mens and Womens GAC. Players and non-players alike are welcome!  If youve never made it out to watch the competition on Championship Sunday, make this the year that you do so!
  • Looking ahead to September, I want to talk a little bit about the Moon Festival event scheduled for Tuesday, September 6th. We have been asked by some members why we’re doing this new event. When we started the year, the Womens Executive had as one of its objectives to make our womens golf group more inclusive.  By that, we meant we wanted everyone (casual, competitive, long-term or new members) to feel equally important to our community. That discussion led us to a number of new initiatives this year. One of these was the Moon Festival. We looked for a holiday or festival celebrated in Asian countries that we could use as a starting point around which to build an event. We found that the Moon Festival was one that both fit into our golfing season calendar and one which has history and meaning that fit well with our objective. The Moon Festival is an ancient mid-autumn festival similar to our Canadian Thanksgiving, and its still celebrated in many areas of Asia today.  Both holidays highlight the happy reunion of family and friends. The Moon Festival celebrates the notion of one moon shining over all people, and we felt it was a wonderful symbol of the goal of “one community within Women’s golf membership at Shaughnessy.” It embraces many of our new members by honouring their history. We will have a very fun day on the golf course with a shotgun starting at 12:30. Post-golf, we will have time to freshen up and change into celebratory attire – Chinese dress is optional, but semi-formal is requested. Chef is working on a delicious dinner to reflect the theme, and weather permitting, we will enjoy your evening meal on the front patio. There will be entertainment to follow as well.
  • Our final formal day of Tuesdays ladies golf will be September 13th that day will be a nod to the exceptional history of Shaughnessy Golf Country Club. Details to follow.

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Happy Summer! From a place of gratitude, it is a great feeling to reconnect and have the opportunity as Shaughnessy members and family to come together again and celebrate old and new Club Events! July, in particular, was filled with many fantastic traditional events such as our Canada Day Pancake Breakfast, the Vintage, Wednesday Men’s Nights on the patio and several Tuesday Interclub Events. Though we hosted many of these traditional events, we also launched a new one with the sold-out Family Day Event that was filled with excitement and included bouncy castles, rock climbing and even a ninja obstacle course. It has also been nice to host several weddings again in July. Many members have waited up to two years to host their loved ones for their special day here at Shaughnessy.

After nearly three years, our Annual Summer Party is slated to return this coming Friday evening, August 12th. Chef James and his team have prepared several food stations that will be accompanied by dozens of beer, liquor and wine stations. It’s a can’t-miss event where you will have the opportunity to enjoy a memorable experience with your fellow members and guests. Please click here to register – note that registration closes on Tuesday, August 9th.

Our Food and Beverage team looks forward to continuing to host you, your family, and your guests as we encourage all of our members and invited guests to join us as we reach the latter half of the summer. Plenty of beautiful patio nights remain that can be enjoyed with fantastic dinner features and wine. Please continue to reach out and make reservations up to 14 days in advance to guarantee a table.

August also indicates we are at the halfway point with our weddings and getting closer to our Club Championships and September’s Round Up. As we inch closer to September, I would like to thank all our Seasonal Food and Beverage Service team members for an amazing season, as many will be returning to school and, of course, Ireland.

Stay tuned for a Fall Menu update and more Shaughnessy Events!

Kerry Enzie
