MEMBER UPDATE

2023 CPKC Women’s Open

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Welcome to a special time in our Club’s history. We are less than three weeks away from hosting the LPGA Tour’s CPKC Women’s Open (CPKCWO) – August 21st to August 27th, 2023. This incredible event will draw the attention of golf enthusiasts worldwide – broadcasted in over 150 countries, with close to 90 of the top 100 players on the LPGA tour expected to grace our beautiful course.

We are proud to say we have hosted numerous PGA and LPGA tour events in the past and we are very well known for being the home of championship golf in Western Canada. Our Club will be the stage where these world-class athletes will experience one of the truest tests of golf in Canada. We take great pride in our tour-proven course and are certain it will provide a challenging yet rewarding experience for each player.

Together with our partners, CPKC, Golf Canada, and Musqueam First Nation, we aim to deliver an unrivalled experience not only for these athletes but also for the 1000+ volunteers and 60,000+ spectators expected during the event. Furthermore, our Food and Beverage team will be welcoming not only players but also many esteemed guests, and will prepare meals for over 7,000 people during the event.

First and foremost, we would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to our fellow members for giving up the course, courts and facilities for several days. Also, a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers who will be donating their time and efforts to the 2023 edition of the CPKC Women’s Open. In addition, a special thank you to all of our Shaughnessy staff members that will be working during the event and ensuring the Shaughnessy Experience for all.

One of the great feel-good storylines that will come from the hosting of the Open is how our Club and our membership have provided a platform for donations to be raised to support BC Children’s and Royal Inland Hospital. Despite the postponement of the 2020 and 2021 version of this event, CPKC donated nearly $3.5 million to these charities and our goal of $2.5 million for this year is well within reach. A special thank you to CPKC for their unwavering commitment to these important charities that benefit our community.

Over the past several months, we have provided updates to the membership and as we finally reach the home-stretch, please take some time to review the information and updates below that will help you better understand the weeks ahead. We also encourage you to read Course Superintendent, Andrew Hart’s report for a comprehensive overview of what’s happening on course prior to the event.

Sincerely,

Diana Maughan, Ken Woods & Ian McLean
2023 CPKC Women’s Open Tournament Co-Chairs

Behind-the-Scenes

We encourage you to learn more about some of the top players in the world through a behind-the-scenes video series that can be viewed by clicking here.

Parking Prior to the Event

The infrastructure buildout has been ramping up over the past week and while there will still be many spaces available in our parking lots, peak times may get crowded. To assist with prioritizing member parking closer to the Clubhouse in advance of the event, staff will be parking in the additional lot area – located north of the parking lot between the entrance road and the 1st fairway. Should you be unable to find parking in our lots that are located closer to the Clubhouse, we ask that you find parking in the additional parking area. Please do not park in non-designated parking areas or in fire lane roadways.

Birdies for Heart Member Challenge

A reminder that for each gross birdie that members post on the 16th hole, CPKC will now donate $250 on behalf of the member benefitting the primary and secondary charities, BC Children’s Hospital and Royal Inland Hospital. Furthermore, this campaign has been extended to the start of the tournament.

As a reminder, members who post gross birdies on the 16th hole as we lead up to the tournament will be eligible for monthly prize draws. After you complete your round of golf, you must notify the Golf Shop if you made a gross birdie on the 16th hole during your round.

Billets Needed

With the CPKC Women’s Open quickly approaching, the need for billets is growing rapidly, and we are hoping for your assistance as soon as possible.

All current billets have received players, and more players are still applying.

If you are willing to billet, please complete the CPKC Women’s Open – Billet Form or contact the Club’s Administration Office as soon as possible. The link for the Frequently Asked Questions and Expectations can be found here.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to send an email to Player Services at billetscpwo@gmail.com.

Access to the Club, Personal Belongings and Parking During the Event

Members will not have access to the clubhouse or the grounds during the event unless a ticket is purchased to the CPKCWO, or if they are volunteering for the event. During the event, members and spectators attending the event will park in Spectator Parking at UBC’s Thunderbird Parkade, with shuttle service provided.

Friday, August 18th at 9 pm is the deadline to remove any personal belongings from the Club that you may need during the closure (August 19th-29th) including from all men’s and women’s locker rooms and club/cart storage. Unfortunately, Shaughnessy team members will not be able to assist you in getting items from these spaces during the closure.

A reminder that the LPGA players will be using the Clubhouse Men’s Locker Room and that members that have lockers in this area must remove their belongings prior to Friday, August 18th at 9 pm. Members will regain access to this area in conjunction with the return to regular Club operations on Wednesday, August 30th.

We thank you for your assistance.

Pro Playing Privileges Prior to the Event

It is possible that some of the players may arrive before Sunday, August 20th when they are due to register. In anticipation of possible requests from the players, the Golf Shop has set up restrictions for access to our practice facilities and course so that members will still have priority. LPGA players will be added to threesomes or twosomes if a spot is available. If you do not wish for an LPGA player to join your group, please contact the Golf Shop directly and make that request.

LPGA players may also use the practice facilities in a limited capacity on a first come first serve basis.

Lottery for the week after the CPKCWO

Members will be anxious to get back on the course on Wednesday, August 30th. The Golf Shop will be running the lottery system as is usually done. Members can enter in their tee time ballots and the tee times will be allocated through the tee time portal online.

CPKCWO Teardown

The teardown of the structures on our course will begin immediately following the event.  The completion and removal of all the equipment and materials will take two to three weeks and the Club will work with Golf Canada to help limit disruptions during key member event dates in September.

Course Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

After much anticipation, it has finally arrived, it’s tournament month!

With the tournament fast approaching, I wanted to walk all of our members through a few of the changes we are currently seeing as we get ready to host the stars of the LPGA Tour to our beloved Shaughnessy.

The Rough

The LPGA has asked for the rough to be raised to 3”. They anticipate that we will be cutting the rough just prior to the first tournament round on Thursday. It is common for tournament officials to have the rough cut throughout the event if they feel the course is playing too challenging (few people know that there was a secret and emergency rough cut during the 2011 Open).

Through the warmest days of July, we raised the rough slightly to help with the turf tolerance and to better handle the drought. At the start of August, we moved the rough to 2 ½” and this increase in height has been more noticeable, as the evapotranspiration rates typically peak on July 25th in our region.  Paired with slightly longer nights and the July 24th rain event, we have seen the rough start to come out of dormancy in areas. As a result, we are seeing increased rough density. After the Club Championship week, the rough will see its final height increase, taking it up to 3” for the week of August 14th.

We will be cutting the rough down quickly after the tournament. On Tuesday, August 29th, we will be cutting the rough for the first time following the Open, however, it will take us a few cuts before we are back to normal summer rough heights. We anticipate additional grass clippings in the rough during this period.

Tee Decks

Both the driving range and on course tee decks are now being protected for the event. On the driving range, we will continue to keep the back tee deck open for any members that are looking to get a little grass practice in. On Tuesday, August 8th, we will be moving the stalls back on to the grass portion of the main deck, where it will remain until Club Championships have concluded.

The locations of on course tee markers will be most noticeable on par 3’s and short par 4’s, particularly in areas where we more commonly see divots being taken. Tee blocks will be moved either forward or backwards on a hole-by-hole basis. We would like to ask if you could kindly respect the protection of these areas and only play from where the markers are placed.

Greens

There will not be any significant change to the speed of the greens before or throughout the event. The LPGA has asked for us to be on the lower end of our member play range.

Fairways

Fairways were narrowed during our spring aeration. We made some slight corrections at the end of July in sections that had seen the fairways migrate back out to their original cut lines. Migration of cut lines is common during the length of the season and requires continuous adjustments. No more changes will be made to the fairway lines between now and the event. They will be readjusted during our fall aeration.

Water

We have a city approved water management plan in place and we are not expecting any concerns related to our ability to manage water going into and during the event.

Structures Buildout

I’m sure many of you have noticed all the structures and activations that are being built on course. We are expecting structures on 8 of the Club’s 18 holes with many others in and around the clubhouse. Note that proper building permits have been issued by the City for these structures.

Volunteers

The Course team will be joined by 20 volunteers throughout the turf industry. A group of 10 “Women in turf” comprised of Assistant Superintendents are being flown in from across Canada and housed by one of our sponsors, Syngenta. We are also excited to welcome back Mathew Hamilton and Kevin Brown, our two former Assistant Superintendents, who will both be joining us during the event. Both Mathew and Kevin have been very involved in preparing for the event which has subsequently helped them in their new roles as Superintendents on Vancouver Island, at Gorge Vale Golf Club and in Halifax, at Ashburn Golf Club.

The course staff are excited and unbelievably proud to be working on such a special property and preparing it to be on the world’s stage. I want to thank our Assistant Superintendents, Morgan Robins and Jeremy Atkins, along with Shaun Honcoop, our Second Assistant Superintendent, Colin Atherton, our Equipment Technician, Gerry Morris, Head Gardener, and the entire Course and Grounds staff for all the hard work and many contributions not only for this season, but in the previous four seasons since the announcement of this event.

On one final note, we ask everyone playing from now until August 19th to do their part in helping us get ready, and to make sure to replace or refill their divots, and repair any ball marks left on the greens.

Respectfully submitted,

Andrew Hart
Course Superintendent

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

With the CPKC Women’s Open quickly approaching, please take extra care when filling divots and fixing ball marks. Shaughnessy will be on the world’s stage and I am sure we would all like to see our golf course look the best it can during the tournament. Note that additional workers are also on the course these days, so remember to yell fore! (if necessary) and take proper relief if you end up on/under or beside the manmade structures. For more detailed information about these rules, please click here.

Thank you to all the players who have been getting their matches in on time as we approach Championship weekend August 12th-13th. Come support your fellow members and see if Will Eddy can win his 7th Club Championship and 3rd in a row. Beverages will be available for on-course spectators with canapes to follow.

Our next big event will be Round Up held on Friday, September 8th and Saturday, September 9th. This year’s Friday event will be big with more prizing, food and beverages than ever! Look for more details on the format coming soon.

Continue to look out for upcoming Men’s events – click here to access our full calendar.

Lastly, congratulations to Andrew Pinette on his win at the BC Senior Men’s Championship held at his hometown course of Williams Lake Golf & Tennis Club. We wish him the best of luck in the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship in September.

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

A quick overview of July. We were very happy to bring back the historical Cookie Two-Ball event, first played in 1950. Some interesting history behind the event – Edna Cooke (Cookie) had to leave Java in a hurry as war was about to break out. She left her husband who was going to serve in the resistance and was able to get on a boat with her baby- without knowing where it was headed! She landed in Australia and eventually came to Vancouver where she rejoined her husband after the war. When she left Java, she put a few of her treasures into a trunk and left it with her neighbours who were Swiss Consulates. After the war, they sent the trunk to Vancouver and in it was her prized tennis trophy, which is now known as the the Two-Ball Trophy. This rich history made this prize even more special!  The trophy is displayed in the Ladies Locker Room. I’m thrilled to have my name on it along with Cheryl E. Lee as the lucky winners of the event.

With Teri Christopher and her committee’s direction, the Women’s Charity Tournament on Friday, July 21st,  was a spectacular success.  A quick message from our Women’s Charity Committee:

We would like to sincerely thank our golfers, donors, Shaughnessy staff, and volunteers for going on an un-fore-gettable Sa-Par-I with us on July 21st. With your generous support, we raised an incredible $154,275 for Kate Booth House and Covenant House Vancouver and had a GRR-EAT time doing it. This event marks the 37th year the Shaughnessy Women’s Charity Golf Tournament has raised much-needed funds for vulnerable women and children.

There were a couple of amazing prizes donated by BMW Canada were given out. Nina Henriksen won the online auction and is off to Chicago for an all-expenses paid trip to the Fedex Playoffs and Jane MacGregor won the draw prize for a trip to Palm Springs and driving lessons at the BMW Performance Driving Track.  It was an amazing day overall!

August will see the Grandmother’s Cup event, a net competition which is a heartfelt event – pictures of grandchildren are encouraged.

The Club Championship is always a stressful but wonderful event.  The pride of being the Shaughnessy Club Champion is a worthy quest and everyone is welcome to join in on the action.  Of course the big event for August is our opportunity to host the world best players the week of August 22nd where many of us will also be volunteering.  The excitement is building and I know we are all anxiously awaiting the 3 inches of rough.  How will these ladies play this beautiful course?

Looking forward to another marvelous month of golf and friendship.

Keep checking out the bulletin board and the full women’s golf calendar for clinics and events that may interest you.
