Frost Delay Policy

In the event of a frost delay, members will be notified via our Daily Lineup email. The Course Superintendent Andrew Hart will communicate at what time the Golf Course will reopen. Once the course reopens, priority on the tee will go to the group that has the next tee time booked. All golfers booked in earlier times will have to re-book a later tee time and will not have priority once the course reopens for play.

President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I am pleased to report that the Club has received preliminary results from the Survey that GGA Partners developed and administered on our behalf. GGA Partners surveys nearly half of Score Golf’s Top 25 golf courses, enabling comparisons between Shaughnessy and these other clubs – in the aggregate.

Over 68% of adult members completed the survey, which is a great sign of member engagement. Per GGA Partners, we were advised that this was an above-average response rate. Our survey results indicated top-of-class satisfaction ratings in many key areas, most notably: the golf course, golf practice areas, tennis operations, clubhouse and locker room facilities, and outdoor dining.

A couple of other key highlights from the preliminary results relate to:

Our Mission. There is clear support for maintaining the highest quality programs, services and facilities, with 84% of respondents in agreement with this mission.

Continuation. Members overwhelmingly support efforts for continuation past 2032; 84% of respondents believe it is a priority to find a way to continue Shaughnessy in one form or another.

With such an extensive survey covering both operating and strategic perspectives, we now have a great deal of useful feedback to review and will work to do so over the next couple of months. While our preliminary findings are very positive, we can of course be better. We will continue to digest and analyze the survey results and use them as an important tool to help guide the Board, committees and management teams to develop goals, strategies and action plans to improve the Shaughnessy Experience.

Expect a more complete report of the survey results in late January, after we have had a chance to work further with GGA Partners to perform more comprehensive segmentation and cross-tabulation analyses. We also plan to ensure we create opportunities for greater engagement from members (not just those on the Board or a committee) on the key matters from the survey.

As we begin the holiday season, I want to wish you all the very best – have a safe and happy holiday time with your family and friends, as we look forward to a great new year.

Respectfully submitted,

Gord Chan

GM’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

First of all, I would like to thank the membership for their patience as we have been navigating our way through a challenging time the past few months with respect to operating our restaurants. Kerry, Rebecca, Piril, Chef James and the rest of the team have done a remarkable job and endured many long days in order to ensure we offer high quality dining experiences for our members. As we prioritize the return of our traditional Christmas events this December, we are looking forward to executing a vast array of plated and buffet Christmas dining experiences for you and your loved ones.

Earlier this year, the Board approved a much-needed kitchen re-design and equipment overhaul. The last significant update and upgrade to our kitchen occurred back in 2006; the re-design and new equipment will help provide Chef James and his team with the tools to better meet Shaughnessy standards from a quality and speed of service perspective.

Our plan was to complete the overhaul during the planned January Clubhouse shutdown of January 1-18. Unfortunately, a few days ago, we received word that some equipment could be delayed due to supply chain issues and could force an additional one-week kitchen shutdown at a later period in 2022. Should this delay occur, we will try to schedule this additional closure during non-peak times, such as after Valentine’s Day or during Spring Aeration. We will be sure to notify the membership of any potential changes that could affect the enjoyment of our restaurants.

On behalf of our entire team, we wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop
General Manager and Chief Operating Officer

Men’s Golf Captain

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

It’s been a privilege serving as Men’s Captain at the top golf club in Canada. The last two years have been a challenge for so many people, and Shaughnessy helped us through these times. Thank you to all of the membership for their support and feedback.

I would like to send thanks to everyone who has donated their time to GAC. Thank you to the past two Ladies’ Captains Danièle Balit and Susan Russell. Thank you to these past captains for your support and insight: Gord Chan, Chris Walwyn, John Snyder, Mike Marlatt, Jay Snyder, Danny Goepel, and Andy Robb.

A special thanks to Dennis Ewasiuk, Ian “Mac” McLean, Sean Gallagher, and John Upton; I appreciate the straightforward and honest feedback. I would like to thank Brian Mossop and his team for keeping me on point and listening to my sometimes-crazy ideas. Thank you to Andrew Hart and his team for ensuring the best course conditions for us each day. And, lastly, thank you to Ashley Zibrik and the whole professional staff, all of whom work tirelessly on our behalf week after week building upon the Shaughnessy Experience.

Having Shaughnessy as an escape during the pandemic has been beyond words. Even with the challenges, we saw record attendance at Men’s Opening Day, the Masters Par 3 Tournament, Gold Cup, and the season-ending Round Up.

I hope that I’ve left the position of Captain in good standing and wish the best of luck to incoming Captain Fraser McKeen and Vice-Captain Chris Read.

This A.V. Macan-designed golf course was conceived to be the toughest test of golf in the area, and it proves this time and time again—so please do your part to help Andrew Hart and his team replace divots, repair ball marks and keep the 4-hour and five-minute pace of play. This will ensure we all get the best Shaughnessy Experience each and every day.

Lastly, if you love this club as much as I do, step up to volunteer for one of the club’s committees; they’ve provided me with new friendships and a sense of camaraderie.

Women’s Golf Captain

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear fellow golfers,

As I near the end of my tenure as Captain in December, I’m reflecting on three thoughts: the fun year we all had together, being content with our present day-to-day outings, and looking forward to a peaceful Christmas season—filled with friends and good food.

On behalf of the Women’s Executive, we would like to thank all those who made the past year possible:

  • Our steady, and inventive Golf Shop crew, whose ideas for a fun golf season we are only just beginning to take advantage of.
  • The Administration Office group, whose guidance through fun and folly has been constant, true, and unwavering.
  • The Course and Grounds crew, with efforts that had us standing in awe of another stellar and consistently high standard course to play on.
  • The Clubhouse team, providing an inviting, friendly atmosphere to comfort us after our attempts at Ko-esque golfing.
  • And the Maintenance department, who keeps it all going for us.

Thank you all, so very much.

And thank you to President Gord Chan and the members of the Board. Gord, your thoughtful considerations on the more serious matters keep us all enjoying our beautiful club. It’s very appreciated, and I wish Gord and the Board much success as he heads into his second year as president.

Blessings and good wishes to all.

I say adieu, for now.

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy Members,

Just in case you missed our recent eNews, I would like to highlight that Sheldon Slonski will be leaving us at the end of December. We are certainly going to miss having him on our team but couldn’t be happier for Sheldon with his new opportunity with PXG! A big thank you to Sheldon for his years of service at the club!

I am sure many of you have seen PGA and LPGA Tour players wear hoodies this past year on TV during their events. This has led to many of our brands offering a wide selection of golf hoodies in their collections for 2022. You will see a few golf-branded hoodies being sold in our Golf Shop, and as per a recent change in the dress code policy approved by the Board of Directors, these will be acceptable to wear on the course as our Club Dress Code continues to evolve with the changing fashion trends. We would also like to remind all members that non-golf sports logos are still prohibited.

Our Golf Shop Wine and Cheese Christmas party was held on Wednesday, December 1st and was a success. If you missed it, do not worry, as we will be offering some great sales for the rest of the month to help with your Christmas shopping!

On behalf of all of the Golf Shop and Back Shop staff, we wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and a very Merry Christmas!

Course Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Coho Salmon Return to Cutthroat Creek

We are pleased to report that we have witnessed the first major return of salmon to Cutthroat Creek in many, many years. We identified a total of 18 coho spawning between the walking bridge on the left of the 4th hole and the 7th tee box. Members of the Musqueam First Nation have counted over 60 coho downstream. Musqueam First Nation has credited the return of salmon to our collaborative efforts in removing invasive species along the creek’s bank.

If you missed the excitement, more coho may be making their way upstream in early December.

Please click here for a video taken on a bend in the creek behind the black tee on the 6th hole.

Rain, Rain, and More Rain

After a 53-day stretch without rain during the summer, it now feels as though we’ve eclipsed that number with consecutive rainy days.

With our thoughts going out to all those impacted by recent unprecedented rainfall, the golf course has thankfully fared much better than most in our region. The course recorded a total of 357mm of rain in November. That’s 35% more rain than Shaughnessy received between all of February and August of this year.

The atmospheric river that moved through Vancouver on November 15th caused flooding throughout the course. The largest impact was felt on the back 9. The drainage ditch that collects water along the forest-side of the 15th hole spilled over its banks and flooded the 14th, 15th and 16th fairways. Flood water then spilled into the maintenance yard, creating an island effect for many of the maintenance buildings. Thankfully, no damage was caused.

We are extremely happy with how well the course processed this unprecedented amount of rainfall. After the rain stopped around noon on Monday, the water levels receded quickly. The course was closed on Tuesday, allowing an extra day for drainage. On Wednesday, the course re-opened and by the end of the week, the course was firm enough to cut all the fairways, tees, approaches and greens!

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

It’s that time of year again, and we are feeling more festive than ever! The Clubhouse exudes the brightness of the season, thanks to the time and effort of all the volunteers and maintenance crew who helped make everything perfect for the holidays.

This year’s holiday events are a beautiful way to celebrate with your family and friends, and Piril Erbakan, our Club Event Manager, has planned everything to ensure an unforgettable experience for you and your loved ones. We are so thrilled to be able to get the club into the holiday spirit with our Buffet Lunches, Dinners, and Santa Parties. On top of all of these, we have spectacular Chef’s Feasts prepared by our talented Executive Chef James Choi and his team, including a five-star, five-course meal that is sure to leave you and your guests impressed. To make a reservation or to be added to the waitlist for any of these events, please click here. We are reviewing all waitlist requests daily. If you have already submitted a waitlist request, rest assured that we will let you know as soon as a spot opens up. At this time, some of our events are sold out.

Over the last two years, we have had to adapt to a lot of changes, and while things are yet to be fully back to normal, it is getting pretty close. Our Christmas events may look a little different from normal as we continue to ensure we follow all COVID protocols and make the health and safety of our members and their guests the top priority.

In addition to the traditional Christmas events the Food & Beverage team have put together, we’ve prepared other ways for you to celebrate the season:

We have hand-selected some outstanding wines and packaged them into Holiday boxes for purchase. We have boxes ranging in varietal and price to help make hosting or gifting that much easier for you. Please contact me for more information and to purchase a box at 604-264-5234 or rrilling@shaughnessy.org.

The bar team has put their elf ears together to create a Rudolph-worthy Holiday Cocktail List. You can enjoy our house-made Shaughnessy Eggnog, Peppermint White Chocolate Martini or Cranberry Kir Royale. If you want to celebrate without the alcohol, we also have the Pomegranate-Ginger Soda and Peppermint Hot Chocolate.

And last but not least, keep your eyes out and tastebuds open for Chef James’ feature menu items. This week, the menu will include a delicious Sticky Toffee Pudding with Brandy Caramel Sauce.

I wish you all Happy Holidays!
