General Manager’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Happy New Year to all! I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday with those closest to you. As we move into 2021, we continue to work behind the scenes to prepare the Club for what is expected to be another busy year for golf and tennis.

With the various unknown factors influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Finance Committee and Board of Directors believed it was prudent to wait until the end of January to confirm key policies that may significantly affect the 2021 budget. As a result, annual dues and fees have not yet been confirmed. Following confirmation at the January Board meeting, those new fees will be communicated to the membership and you will notice adjustments on the statement you receive in early February.

By now, you will have received the email requiring all members to review and acknowledge the Club’s Code of Conduct and COVID-19 protocols by January 31st. All members are required to indicate their acknowledgement – to complete this acknowledgement, please click here.

The CP Women’s Open is still on for August 23rd to August 29th. Our Tournament Co-Chairs, Ken Woods and Diana Maughan, as well as myself and President Gord Chan, remain in close contact with Golf Canada. Please continue to review Club communications for more information about volunteering and ticket sales.

In order to best serve the needs of the membership, we have undergone a restructuring and re-allocation of duties in the Administration department. I am pleased to name Harvey Dykes, our previous Controller, as Director of Finance and Facilities, and Gabrielle Ricci, our previous Executive Assistant, as Human Resources Generalist. Thomas Wang, previous Accounting Supervisor, will move into the role of Controller, and previous Receptionist Fatima De La Torre will move into the role of Executive Assistant. Please click here to learn more about this restructuring.

Looking forward to a fantastic 2021!

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Happy New Year, fellow members,

With great pleasure, I will be serving as your Men’s Golf Captain again for 2021.

We have experienced an unimaginable challenge with COVID-19, and I, for one, cannot express my gratitude enough to have had the good fortune to escape and play golf at Shaughnessy each day—and it’s been a lot of golf!!

I want to say thank you to Ashley Zibrik and her team for their professionalism every day.

Thank you to Andrew Hart and his crew for giving us an amazing golf course that has seen unprecedented play. Members, please follow the requests of our Course team and do your part when it comes to replacing divots, repairing ball marks, walking proper routes, and say thank you every time a Course team member stops their job to let us play through.

Thank you to the unsung hero Bernard Ting and his team, boy do these guys set the table. They greet us with smiles, deal with multiple requests for clubs, carts, towels and sand bottles, and always ask how our round was when we return to the Clubhouse.

We have been hard at work setting the schedule for 2021. I hope that we can get back to adding dinners to our tournaments—the ultimate Shaughnessy Experience. If not, we will be doing our best to improve on what we provided in 2020.

These have been challenging times for everyone. You all have a voice, and your feedback is welcome; however, please remember to do so in a respectful manner and through the proper channels.

Now let’s go get 2021!!

Respectfully submitted,

Sean Crowther

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Happy New Year from the Women’s Golf Activities Committee.

Welcome everyone to the 2021 Season.

It is my sincere pleasure to be the 2021 Women’s Golf Captain. I am honoured to be on this exciting golf journey with you all.

May I introduce our executive to you:

Leslie Cliff

And myself as your Captain

Our goal continues from last year: to create a program that includes all levels of play and interests and to foster friendships that last a lifetime.

We are excited to announce the In-House Interclub Team Match Play, in place of the external Interclub Team Match Play that will not be possible this coming year. Two In-House teams will play four (4) times this year: The Georgia Straights and The Fraser Flyers. The format will be the same as playing a Match Play event against another club. We will organize the events for experienced and beginner players alike. We don’t want to lose our Team Play skills while we wait for vaccine distribution! Sign up will be online—stay tuned for more info.

One more exciting event we are adding this year is our new Mid-Amateur Champion Trophy. It will be played as a one-day gross score event on the first day of qualifying for the Club Championship. Ages 21-59 can play. This is an age group that we may not have covered in the past with our Cup competitions; we would like to start with this inaugural event.

My special words of grateful thanks to those of you who are stepping up to volunteer your time and ideas for our upcoming events; it is your contributions that make each year at Shaughnessy so successful.

A great Golf Shop team will be assisting us this year, and I look forward to having them out playing with us and helping us run events.

This coming year, Michelle Waters and Zach Pichor will be on our team, along with the Director of Golf, Ashley Zibrik. We are in good hands.

Thanks go out to Michael Thompson, as he leaves us for another assignment at the Club.

I wish everyone a healthy Happy New Year, with warm thoughts of seeing you all out there soon.

Be calm, be safe, be respectful, and let’s have some fun golf.

Respectfully submitted,

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

The numbers are in. Despite a 6-week closure and COVID-19 challenges, we were able to break our rounds of golf record by 10,305, a 29% increase!

Total Rounds in 2019 = 35533

Total Rounds in 2020 = 45838

This record rounds played this year was further fueled by a 55% increase in rounds played this Fall/Winter (September-December) over last year. In addition, with COVID-19 related guest policy restricting guest access, we have seen guest play drop from 9% to 0.45% this year. Congratulations to all of you who have been getting out in cold and wet conditions. We now know that we have many dedicated golfers at our club, and we can’t wait to see your handicaps drop when the active season returns. My team and I are grateful that golf was able to flourish during a global pandemic, and we thank you for your support and understanding this past season.

Another positive from 2020 in our golf operation is the success of your member-owned golf shop. We were lucky to have great support from our membership; we recorded our best year to date with a 9% increase in sales. Our team is proud to be one of the top golf shops in the country.

Happy New Year; we are really looking forward to what 2021 has in store!

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

As we step into the new year, I want to wave goodbye to 2020 and embrace the new hope, aspiration, and ambition of 2021. I am very grateful for all the support and contributions from our leaders, members, and staff over the holidays. I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our team for their dedication and the extra miles that they have worked to make our Holiday Season a warm and wonderful success.

“The beginning is the most important part of work” – Plato. This quote rings true for the Food & Beverage Department in 2021. We look forward to sharing our Refreshed Winter Menu with the membership on Monday, January 18th, along with presenting a weekly prix fixe menu of features each week.

Don’t forget to make a reservation for a night of sweets, wine and all things divine and delicious on Valentine’s weekend—February 12th, 13th, and 14th.

This month, we offer an alternative to “Dry January” with the launch of our ever-evolving Special Select Wines list. For the adventurous types, our January housecleaning allows us to feature vintage wines from our various wine storage units as we make way for new selections—come try one-of-a-kind wines this January.

2020, if nothing else, has shown us that Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club is able to adapt while maintaining its traditions. Members were able to continue gathering with their core bubbles and households in the comfort of our dining rooms and lounges to celebrate little and grand wins on the tennis courts, on the greens, and more.

As we continue to ensure our adherence to the province’s COVID-19 restrictions, I offer a small reminder that reservations are encouraged due to our resultant limited seating capacity.

I look forward to seeing you soon at the Club.
