President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Happy New Year to all! I hope that you all had a safe and happy holiday season with those closest to you.

First and foremost, a special thank you to Kerry, Chef James, Piril, Rebecca and the rest of the F&B team for executing a fantastic Shaughnessy Christmas event season despite all the challenges we faced with respect to changing health orders and staffing.

On another note, I am pleased to share that Canadian Pacific (CP) recently announced that fundraising efforts over the past two years for the CP Women’s Open have helped raise more than $2.8 million to support important equipment purchases and research at BC Children’s Hospital, along with an additional $557,000 for Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital. For two years in a row, due to the pandemic, we have not been able to hold the CP Women’s Open (both slated for Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club), but that has not diminished the incredible generosity from CP to our local community. It is great to know that we, in a small way, have helped contribute to these important efforts and we look forward to providing this charitable platform again when we host the 2023 CP Women’s Open with an amazing team of volunteers and partners in place.

Similar to last year as we continue to navigate the pandemic, the Finance Committee and Board of Directors have decided again to wait until the end of January to confirm many key policies that affect the 2022 budget. As a result, annual dues and fees will be confirmed at the January Board Meeting and then communicated to the membership. You will notice adjustments on the statement you receive in early February.

As we move officially into the new committee year, I would like to acknowledge our committee chairs and captains who will be integral to ensuring another successful year for the Club:

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Happy New Year, fellow members,

I am very excited to be able to contribute back to this club and serve as your Men’s Golf Captain for 2022, joined by Chris Read as Vice-Captain. My family has a long history with the club (back to the original location!) and so I have grown up with both the memories and memorabilia from past events, and I am so happy that I can help to continue the wonderful traditions and legacy of this club.

I want to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the outgoing Captain, Sean Crowther, as well as Ashley Zibrik, Andrew Hart, Brian Mossop and their respective teams for stewarding our golf course and events through the last two years of COVID-19. Not only did they maintain the Shaughnessy Experience, but I know we can all agree that this club and course have never been better despite those challenges.

As I write this, we continue to face another uncertain year. One thing we can count on is that there will be no better place to be than Shaughnessy, and it will be up to not just the staff but all the members to do our part. Please follow the requests of our Course team when it comes to replacing divots, repairing ball marks, walking proper routes, and whatever else is needed to maintain a fun and safe environment to play golf.

We have been hard at work setting the event schedule for 2022. Along with the Women’s Captain Carolyn Naylor, I am hopeful that we can add a few more events back to the calendar that we haven’t been able to have in the past few years, such as the Cold Duck. Of course, everything is written in pencil rather than pen these days, but whatever form they take, we know that we can adapt and still run some fantastic events.

I look forward to seeing those that I know and meeting many of the members that I haven’t yet – please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for any golf-related matter. We are so fortunate to have Shaughnessy and our amazing staff in these uncertain times; there is truly no better place to be!

See you on the course!

Respectfully submitted,

Fraser McKeen

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Happy New Year from your 2022 Women’s Golf Executive:

We look forward to working with the following members who have volunteered their time to serve on the Women’s Golf Activities Committee this year:

  • Chinami Hancock: Rules
  • Sandra Thompson: Handicap
  • Jane Macgregor and Kelly Barber: Women’s Charity
  • Holly Horwood: Club Championship Chair

In previous years, the Executive has initiated changes to make the Women’s Golf program increasingly professional with the use of online registrations, e-blasts, digital results communication, etc. This year, we will continue that effort and move forward to deliver a season that we hope you will find most enjoyable. To that end, we are making use of the considerable talent of the professional staff to help plan and execute events. Michelle Waters, the Women’s Coordinator, and Zach Pichor have taken up the challenge with great enthusiasm. You will see a complete season schedule with all details published well before Opening Day, which is planned for April 26, 2022.

There are several changes to the program for the 2022 season. Here are some things to watch for:

The Opening Day event will be a surprise format, being developed by the professional team headed up by Ashley Zibrik.

The Ryder Cup will morph into the Solheim Cup this year. As one of our signature events, we have added new layers of fun this year.

Our season-closing event to be held on September 13th will celebrate the Moon Festival and serve to honor and celebrate the diversity of the membership at our Club.

We keep fingers crossed that we will be able to enjoy indoor dining along with some of our events.

Business Women golf tee times are available on Saturdays again this year. If you are still working and would like to play some organized golf, please sign up for one of the three tee times reserved for you. Just as we have done with Tuesday events, we have asked the professional staff to be more involved in the overall coordination of the Business Women calendar. To that end, Carson Kallis will plan and execute the Business Women events.

It is our sincere hope that we will be able to resume Interclub competition. Kathy Forrest and Virginia Lam have volunteered to co-chair this part of the program this year. We are putting everything in place assuming that it will go ahead. There will be the opportunity to sign up for an Interclub team. Please watch for details via email.

For the women who enjoy golf on a less-competitive level, there is a very active, very inclusive and very fun group of casual golfers who play on Tuesdays as well. Teri Christopher has organized that group. If you are interested in playing with a great group of more casual golfers, please email Teri at teric@mdev.ca; she will communicate with you personally. As the new season unfolds, we will have opportunities to mix in the casual foursomes with the event foursomes, which will result in more social mixing at the after-golf gatherings.

Last but not least, this year we will be hosting (fingers crossed again) the 50th Anniversary of the Annual Exchange with the Victoria Golf Club. The date is planned for June 28th; mark your calendar. You won’t want to miss this special day as we host members from the Victoria Golf Club and compete for the coveted Crystal Bowl Trophy.

We are so grateful to have the opportunity to play this wonderful sport on a spectacular course, with a great group of members and a truly outstanding staff.

At this time of year, let’s take time to appreciate how fortunate we are. And as the upcoming season approaches, let us all work together to make Shaughnessy a place where the women’s golf members are kind to one another, inclusive of all members, and incredibly fun!

Carolyn Naylor

Golf Report

Dear Members,

Happy New Year to all of you and I hope you enjoyed the holiday season!

I am happy to say that we will be welcoming back each of our Golf Professionals in 2022, but had to say goodbye to our Retail Manager, Sheldon Slonski. As most of you may have heard already, Sheldon Slonski has moved onto an exciting opportunity with PXG and we wish him nothing but the best in his new career! With that said, I am thrilled to announce our new Retail Manager Chris Ward, who will be making the move out to B.C. from Alberta and will start his position at the Club on March 1st.

Chris grew up in Edmonton and played junior golf at Highlands Golf Club, Edmonton Country Club, and Edmonton Petroleum Golf & Country Club (EPGCC). He was part of the St. Francis Xavier Golf Academy from 2010-2012, which is where Chris fell in love with the game. Chris attended the Professional Golf Management Program at Grant MacEwan University, where he earned his Business Management Diploma. Later he enrolled in the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology for the BBA Marketing Degree Program. Chris worked in the golf department at Sport Chek West Edmonton Mall for seven years through school where he was involved with club fittings and retail. In 2011, he joined the team at the Blackhawk Golf Club in the member services department. The past eight seasons, Chris has worked at the Edmonton Petroleum Golf & Country Club. He is an Associate Professional who is involved in all aspects of the golf operation and prides himself on offering the highest level of customer service. Along with his contributions to the EPGCC, Chris has been a very active member of the PGA of Alberta and is committed to learning and improving himself. He has served as the VP of the PGA of Alberta Assistant’s Board of Directors and the Education Committee, while also spending time on the PGA of Canada’s Diversity & Inclusion Task Force. We will be cheering for Chris as he is currently up for two 2021 National Awards within the PGA of Canada – the Stan Leonard Class “A” Professional of the Year and the Tex Noble Professional Development Award, which he has already won provincially in Alberta. All national winners will be announced in late January.

Here’s to hoping that the snow melts soon, the rain stays away, and that members can play some golf this month! We look forward to welcoming many of you back when the time comes.
