Indoor Tennis Centre Roof Repairs

Please note that scheduled repairs of the Indoor Tennis Centre roof began on Thursday, July 7th, 2022, and will last approximately two weeks.

Part of the repair process is replacing thousands of screws on the roof, and we expect there to be some noise disturbances during the process.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello members,

To start off, a big congratulations to Will Eddy for winning the Gold Cup. It was a fantastic two days of golf, and from what I saw on the weekend, there will be some heated battles all summer. I hope everyone is enjoying some good, friendly competition in all of their matches.

Looking forward into July, we have several events coming up. We are really looking forward to hosting our Men’s Member/Guest with lunch, a full day of golf, dinner and activities. This traditional event has been postponed for a few years, and we can’t wait to host when our golf course is at its peak in the middle of summer. Also coming up is the Captains’ Classic, which has become a very fun mixed event. Ladies’ Captain Carolyn Naylor and I will be leading our respective teams, and I encourage everyone to come out and play. Lastly, we will be having a fun family day on Sunday, July 24th, which will give us a chance to build on the annual success of Canada Day and put on a really fun day of activities for the members and their families. To register for the Family Day Barbecue & Games event, please click here.

Summer golf is finally here, and there is no better place to be. I hope that everyone is enjoying the Club, their golf, and all of the matches and events.

Please remember to post all your scores if you would like to play in our competitive events at the Club.

Dear Members

The month of June saw a flurry of activity at our Club. The wonderful Solheim Cup set the tone. Attendance was high, the dinner was absolutely incredible (thank you to Chef James and team), and the camaraderie made for a perfect day. Team International (once again) took home the honours.

The 2-Day Eclectic served as the qualifier for the Capilano Exchange to take place on August 12th, and the 50th anniversary of the Victoria Exchange was held on June 28th. Please see some photos from the Victoria Exchange below.

For the Victoria Exchange, a special cake was baked and decorated for the day, and commemorative ball markers were given to all the participants. Team Shaughnessy took the coveted Rose Bowl back from Victoria. A putting contest took place on the upper putting green, a new activity for the event. Shaughnessy’s four qualifying putters took on Victoria’s best putters and walked away with the prize in a very close match. A special thanks to the professional staff for extending such a warm welcome to the Victoria contingent and to Jaymie Ho, Leslie Cliff and Diana Maughan for their contributions to the day.

July will see the continuation of the Interclub Team matches.

The Ladies Charity event in support of Kate Booth House will happen Friday, July 8th with a field of nearly 100 participants. This marks the 36th year that SGCC has raised funds in support of women and children escaping domestic violence. A special kudos to Jane Macgregor, the event Chair; Nina Henriksen, Silent Auction Coordinator; and Leslie Cliff, Diane Fulton and Penny Crosby, our fundraising team.

Our Senior Club Championships will be held on Tuesday, July 12th, and the Captains’ Classic will see Team Naylor competing against Team McKeen on Friday, July 22nd. Please see registration links in the calendar section of the Green.

Please click here to see our full Ladies’ Day calendar of events.

A special shout out to Ashley Zibrik and Michelle Waters who were the only two-woman team competing in the PGA of BC Pro-Assistant Championship at Crown Isle on July 4 and 5th. These two ladies make us all so proud, and we count ourselves so lucky to be able to work with them.

It is so hard to believe that it’s less than six months until the big guy in the red suit will be dropping in! In the meantime, enjoy our beautiful golf club!

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy Members,

We are now officially in summer season; the golf course is back to playing firm and fast! One of our members said something quite funny to me regarding the change in course conditions…he mentioned his greens in regulation now go to “greens visited” as he watches his ball roll over the back. It really is a different game this time of year, requiring solid strikes to hold our greens.

With Andrew Hart and our Course and Grounds Crew having our track in such great shape, I want to remind everyone of a few things you should be doing during your round to help keep it in great shape:

1. Be aware of your group’s position on the golf course, and remember that our pace of play is 4 hours and 5 minutes.

2. Replace or fill all divots taken.

3. Fix as many ball marks as time permits when you are on the putting green.

4. Golf balls are rolling out more these days, so be careful you are not hitting into the group ahead of you.

5. Please rake the bunkers if you go in them.

6. With the recent rain and warmer weather, we are seeing our first seasonal wave of mosquitoes on course. Please remember to apply bug spray while on a cart path, as the chemicals will damage the turf.

If we all take pride in our beautiful course, the conditions will stay top-notch throughout the summer for everyone to enjoy. Thanks in advance for your efforts in doing the little things that matter.

Lastly, congratulations to Matt Wright-Smith for taking home the coveted Shaughnessy’s Best Short Game belt with his win on Canada Day! Members were put to the test in four categories during the 8-shot challenge. If anyone would like to compete against the Champ, they are welcome to ask to try to steal the belt from him! We will see who ends up with the belt prior to Fall Aeration.

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Our Food & Beverage Team has had the pleasure to host and serve our members and their families and friends at our recent traditional events, most recently our Canada Day Pancake Breakfast. We would like to thank our Board of Directors for their help in the preparation and delivery of our Canada Day Pancake Breakfast; the day was a huge success with great feedback. We look forward to conducting more traditional events this year, including our Annual Summer Party celebration on August 12th; stay tuned for registration details.

Registration for our Family Day Barbecue & Games opened yesterday. The event will take place on Sunday, July 24th from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. For more information, please see the poster below. To register, please click here.

For our wine connoisseurs, our wine list has been growing; we have recently added new and exciting wines to the menu based on member feedback and winery allocations. Don’t forget to ask your server for their recommendations on pairings based on our expanded inventory; you might find a new favourite.

As of this week, we have extended our restaurant dining hours of operation on Mondays until 5:00 PM for food service until further notice. The last call for food service is 5:00 PM and the last call for alcohol service is 6:00 PM. Please note that breakfast and lunch service will continue to be available on Mondays in the A.V. Macan Lounge and the 19th Hole/Garden Lounge areas. The Halfway House and Jack’s First Tee Lounge will continue to operate with regular operating hours.

Our seasonal features continue to impress and delight. Until the end of July, try a Grilled BC Peach Salad with red peppers, arugula, goat cheese, basil, marcona almonds and a white balsamic vinaigrette. And, continuing for another month due to popular demand, try our Roasted Soy-Marinated Sablefish with broccolini, green beans, mashed potatoes, and an unagi sauce. And, last but not least, we continue to offer Porchetta every Sunday night and Prime Rib on Thursday nights. Please make your reservations by calling the Host Stand at 604.264.5249.

A quick reminder here that reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance by calling the Host Stand. This is especially important for our ever-popular Friday nights with our Patio Series entertainment, as seating are filling up fast. For a full list of dates and artists, please visit the Dining page on our website or app.

We wish everyone a great summer of golf, tennis and dining at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club.
