CPKC Women’s Open Update

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Following the magic created by Nick Taylor’s recent win at the RBC Canadian Open, a watershed moment in Canadian golf history, we are filled with anticipation for the upcoming 2023 CPKC Women’s Open. Inspired by Taylor’s achievement, we are committed to orchestrating a memorable tournament at Shaughnessy, a stage set for the best in the world to create their own magic.

We are delighted to convey that we expect at least 90 of the top 100 players on the LPGA tour to participate. A testament to the tournament’s importance in the LPGA’s schedule and to the players for having the desire to test themselves at a tour-proven course like ours. We encourage you to learn more about some of the top players in the world through a unique, behind-the-scenes video series that can be viewed by clicking here.

Working closely with our partners, CPKC, Golf Canada, and Musqueam First Nation, we are focused on delivering an unrivalled experience for these world-class athletes and for the 50,000+ spectators we expect during the event.

Our dedicated committees are ramping up, and the volunteer recruitment drive is progressing well with over 950 committed volunteers, but we have more recruiting to do to meet our target of 1,200, with a specific need for more on-course marshals. If you, or someone you know, are inspired to be a part of the excitement, remember, it’s not too late! You can seize this opportunity to make a difference in this major tournament by signing up here.

We also invite our members to contribute further to the event by billeting LPGA players and their caddies. If you can extend space in your home and provide hospitality, we would be thrilled to hear from you. Please click here for more information on billeting.

Additionally, we are also in need of caddies for amateurs during the pro-ams. Caddying presents a unique chance to witness an LPGA event from inside the ropes. Should you be interested, please apply by completing the registration form found here.

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Dear fellow members,

Summer golf season has finally arrived. So, let’s kick up the vibes and hit longer drives!

That said, do be mindful of the back-deck range if you are hitting “bombs”. And with lots of range use lately, try to keep your divot patterns in a straight line.

Hopefully, many of you celebrated Canada Day and got a chance to enjoy the famous pancake breakfast served by our board of directors.

Events are really what the Shaughnessy experience is all about. Recently, I had the pleasure of attending an amazing dinner with the good ol’ boys who played in The Vintage. Dr. Bob Meek helped organize a fantastic event that is rooted in tradition and one that I hope to play in at Shaughnessy one day.

For a list of upcoming Men’s events, click here to access our full calendar.

Good luck to all the match play participants this Summer and thank you to all who play their games before the deadlines.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Read

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

A quick look at what happened in June… Sixteen women plus Ashley Zibrik and Michelle Waters played at Cordova Bay on Monday, June 12th, and then had our annual competition against the Victoria Golf Club on Tuesday, June 13th. It really was a blast of fun, with Victoria earning the win this year. I highly recommend this event in the future for anyone seeking competition, camaraderie, and fun. Finally, after many years of defeat, Canada won our Solheim Cup event. The highlight for me was the delicious halibut dinner.

We ended the month with the Senior Club Championships with winners Christina Wong, Holly Horwood, Beth Goehring, and Kathy Brady. It was a marvellous month of friendship and golf.

Please know that for all Tuesday events, there is a lunch usually in the Garden Lounge or on the Garden Lounge patio. I look forward to seeing you there.

Looking ahead this month, we see the return of the historical Cookie 2-Ball event. The trophy was donated over sixty years ago by Edna Cooke when she returned to Vancouver after WWII from Java via Australia. We are hoping her daughter Mary Jane will be joining us for lunch. The highlight of July will be our Charity event, which is also our annual member/guest event. Teri Christopher and her committee will not disappoint. It is sold out, so you are probably coming – prepare your safari outfit. See above for the online auction of the 2023 BMW Championship Experience for Two. It’s an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Chicago for the Fed Ex Playoffs in August. All dollars raised from this auction will directly benefit Covenant House Vancouver and Kate Booth House.

Keep checking the bulletin board for clinics and events that may interest you. Please click here to see our full calendar of events.
