Men’s Golf Captain’s Report

Hello fellow members,

Firstly, a big thank you to our Club President David Plunkett and the rest of the Board members who volunteered to flip pancakes on July 1st. Piril, James, and their F&B team outdid themselves; I don’t think I have ever seen the parking lot that busy in a very long time.

June was a very busy month events-wise. First, we had the Talon—our first annual Member/Member event. Ashley and her team knocked it out of the park on this one. If you talk to anyone who played in this event, this is the one “Can’t-Miss” event next year. The day was filled with golf, food, more food, and prizes, and it finished off with a good-old-fashioned shootout of the top teams from each flight. A big congratulations to Chengshan Zhang & Toby Yu for becoming our 2024 Talon Match Play Champions. Honourable mention to our Vice-Captain Josh Zhang and his partner Robert Murphy for coming in a close second.

The Vintage was played on June 27th, and I was fortunate enough to join everyone for dinner after golf; thank you to Dr. Meek for the thoughtful invitation. The team of James Sced, Don Potvin, James Kuan, and Don Risk won the event with 122 points; a very strong showing, gentlemen! Also, congratulations to Robert Choy and Daryl Johnson for the overall low net and overall low net in the 65+ category.

The Season-Long Club Championship Match Play brackets, including Mixed, Fourball, Cufflinks, Dr. Fahrni Father/Son, Legends, Super-Senior, and Senior, are in full swing and moving onto further brackets. With all the matches and tournaments underway, please remember to post your scores to ensure you are eligible to compete in this year’s events. If you have any questions regarding the posting requirements, please feel free to reach out to me or the golf staff.

Our next major event is our Member/Guest which will be held on July 12th. There are only a couple of spots left, so please don’t miss this great event. Click here for registration.

I look forward to continuing to seeing those of you that I know and, of course, to meeting any of the members I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me regarding any golf-related matter.

 Respectfully submitted,

 Ron Emerson Jr.

Women’s Golf Captain’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

In June, we still experienced ever-changing weather, but we always made our golfing enjoyable, even in the rain.

At the beginning of June, Shaughnessy team players competed in the second Interclub match on June 4th.

The 2-day Eclectic event took place on June 10th and 11th. Congratulations to the ladies who won the prizes, including:

  • Mary Wilkinson Trophy Winner (Low Gross): Holly Horwood
  • Low Gross Runner-Up: Michelle Yuan
  • Daphne Evans Trophy Winner (Low Net): Sylvia Fitzgerald
  • Low Net Runner-Up: Susan Mueller
  • Most Improved Player: Dianne Cook

On June 10th, the ladies competed for 16 spots in the Beatrice Evans Cup. Holly Horwood won the Low Gross and Sally Lazaruk won the Low Net. Congratulations to these 16 ladies who qualified to play in the Beatrice Evans Cup: Sally Lazaruk, Renee Ren, Virginia Lam, Lynette Cooper, Danièle Balit, Susan Mueller, Diane Jang, Nina Henriksen, Holly Horwood, Kathy Forrest, Jun Wang, Marija Kerr, Sylvia Fitzgerald, Carolyn Naylor, Heather Jessiman, and yours truly. The winner will be determined through four rounds of match play to be completed by September 3rd.

Shaughnessy hosted the 52nd Victoria Exchange this year a fun-loving, competitive competition between Shaughnessy and Victoria. The tradition began in the 1950s and has been so popular that it has continued every year since. This year’s event was held on June 18th, where 32 ladies from both clubs competed for the Silver Bowl Trophy on a lovely sunny day. The Shaughnessy ladies, playing on their home course, captured the trophy with 67 points to Victoria’s 59. The results may vary from year to year, but the friendship between the two clubs’ ladies remains constant and will undoubtedly last forever.

Whether a grandma or not, ladies came out to play in the Grans + Non-Grans Event on June 25th. This event was started by Mrs. Mary Adam after her captaincy in 1949. Congratulations to the Mary Adam Trophy winner Irene Loughran and Non-Grans winner Cheryl Costello. A special congratulations to Cheryl E. Lee for winning the KP on #17. She was the only lady in the casual game to hit the green in regulation.

It was very exciting to see ladies winning prizes or qualifying for the first time. We can’t wait to celebrate the outstanding performances of more ladies in future events.

Looking forward, there are big events for us in July: Team Interclub #3 on July 9th and #4 on July 30th, the Women’s Senior Club Championship on July 16th, and the Shaughnessy Women’s Charity Golf Invitational on July 26th. Play well, ladies!

The Shaughnessy Women’s Charity Golf Invitational will continue its tradition of supporting women and children in need in our city. This year’s tournament sold out quickly, but donations from our membership to Kate Booth House and Covenant House Vancouver are still being accepted. Please continue to support these charities by donating at http://sgcc.golf/womens-charity-donate.

Wishing all of you success in your games in July!

 Respectfully submitted,

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Now that we are officially into summer, I wanted to take the opportunity to remind all of you about some general etiquette considerations as we continue to uphold our standards of excellence. Central to this is ensuring a pleasant environment for everyone and maintaining the integrity of our club’s reputation.

Pace of Play
Our pace of play at Shaughnessy is 4hrs and 5min except for weekend and holiday mornings, where the first hour of tee times are expected to play in 3hrs and 45min. One of the most critical aspects of golf etiquette is maintaining an appropriate pace of play. Slow play can disrupt the enjoyment of others on the course. Please be mindful of your group’s pace and keep up with the group ahead.

Repairing Divots and Ball Marks
Taking care of the course is a collective responsibility. Always repair divots (replace turf when the turf is intact or fill the divot with sand and seed) and ball marks on the greens promptly. This small gesture preserves the quality of our playing surfaces for everyone.

Cell Phone Usage
As per the Club Rules, only non-verbal use of cell phones is permitted on the course and our practice facilities. Should you wish to make or take a phone call, please use one of the designated phone booths in the Clubhouse or head to the main parking lot.

Dress Code
Our club maintains a dress code to uphold a certain standard of decorum. Please familiarize yourself with and adhere to the dress code guidelines, both on the course and in the Clubhouse.

Care for Bunkers
After playing a shot from a bunker, rake the sand to smooth out footprints and other disturbances. Leave the bunker in a condition that you would like to find it in yourself. Please place the bunker rakes parallel to the hole you are playing.

Respect for Fellow Members and Staff
Treat fellow members, guests, and club staff with respect and courtesy. A friendly and welcoming atmosphere enhances everyone’s experience at the Club. Should you witness any club rules infractions during your time at the Club, please report them to staff as opposed to other members directly.

Honesty and Integrity
Please adhere to the rules of golf and maintain honesty in scoring and play. This ensures trust and fairness among all players. Handicap audits are constantly done by the Golf Professional Staff to ensure all competitive members meet our tournament handicap eligibility policy with a minimum posting percentage of 80%.

Booking and Canceling Tee Times
Be mindful of others when booking tee times, and cancel reservations promptly if your plans change. This allows other members to utilize available tee slots.

Adhere to signage
We have some beautiful new wood signs at the practice facilities as well as on course, mainly to avoid foot traffic in certain areas. A couple examples would be to please not walk across the 1st hole to get to or from the driving range and power carts/pull carts are asked to stay on the cart path on all our Par 3’s.

Golf Genius Registration
Our Professional Staff take pride in executing great member events at the Club. We have seen a large increase in the number of last-minute member cancellations for club events, which affects our organization, tournament draws and food and beverage department. Check your calendar before signing up to ensure you can play in the event.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have any questions or need clarification on any of the points mentioned above, please contact me or a member of our golf shop staff.

Here’s to many more memorable rounds of golf and a great summer ahead!

Respectfully submitted,

Ashley Zibrik

Course & Grounds Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I want to bring to your attention a few course & grounds updates and etiquette considerations as we are in the midst of peak golf season at the Club.

Robotic Mowers
Over the remainder of the summer, you might start to notice a few more robots around the golf course. The race for autonomous mowers in the turf industry has been ramping up over the past few years, almost as quickly as the technology has advanced. This past year, we have seen a huge increase in Roomba-style mowers, moving away from trenched-in perimeter wire to using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and Exact Positioning Operating System (EPOS). Both systems allow us to program new zones with ease.

One of the main benefits of robotic mowing systems is their lightweight nature. Smaller units weigh around 50 lbs, while larger units max out at 150 lbs. This is a dramatic departure from the 5,500 lbs range of classic ride-on mowers typically used on courses. We hope to see a significant decrease in pressure per square inch (PSI), resulting in less turf stress throughout the course.

We will be using these mowers in more out-of-play areas to monitor the quality of the product produced. You might see them from time to time throughout the day, but the majority of their operations will be at night.

Maintenance Blocks
These blocks that were introduced five years ago on Tuesdays through Sundays at 9:50 AM and 10:00 AM, have significantly improved course conditions. Their ability to allow the team to continue maintenance lend to efficiency throughout the day and provides numerous benefits to course conditioning. The maintenance work moves with the speed of play and should be viewed as two groups playing golf. We kindly ask that you be respectful of the staff and their safety in these blocks while they work on improving the course for your enjoyment.

Ball Marks
As Ashley alluded to in her report, the slow start to summer has brought more precipitation, resulting in greens that are more susceptible to ball marks. With an average of 200 rounds a day at this time of year, even a small percentage of unrepaired ball marks can have a major impact on the smoothness of the putting surface for the members playing behind you. Please repair your ball marks throughout your round.

    Food & Beverage Report

    Dear Shaughnessy members,

June was a busy month at the Club with many signature golf, tennis and dining events happening. With that said, summer is only just starting and there is a host of upcoming events to mark of your calendars and to register early for.

First and foremost, we have the Annual Summer Party: Havana Nights. The event will include a variety of classic Cuban dishes, hosted house beverages, including a Rum Bar and house-made tropical cocktails, as well as beverage tasting stations with featured wine, beer and spirits. Please click here to register to attend and for more info.

Stay tuned for more details on upcoming events, including the ever-popular Family Fun-Day happening on August 18th.

Please note that all dining outlets will close at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 19th, except for Jack’s First Tee Lounge and the Halfway House in order to host the Annual Summer Party (see above for more details and registration).

For the month of July, for both lunch and dinner, enjoy the Summer Chopped Salad feature with grilled peaches, arugula, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, goat cheese, pistachios, and a sherry vinaigrette. And for dinner only, try the Seared Jumbo Prawns feature with a summer corn succotash, asparagus, tomato beurre blanc, and pearl onions.

Based on positive feedback and popular demand, we have added the Mediterranean Garden Salad to the menu for the summer season. Further, on July 2nd, we added more new items to the dining menus, including Mini Chicken Kebabs for both lunch and dinner and Rigatoni and Seared Chicken Breast for dinner only.

Starting Sunday, July 14th, Bavette Steak Night will become Sunday Rotisserie Chicken. Available from 5:00 PM until closing on Sundays, the 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken will be served with a garden herb gremolata, seasonal vegetables, pomme purée, and roasted garlic, all for $27. Please make your reservation online by clicking here or by calling the Host Stand at 604.264.5249.

Lastly, don’t forget to enjoy live music on Shaughnessy’s dining patios every Friday evening from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM as part of our Summer Patio Music Series and that on Thursday nights we continue to host Prime Rib Nights and offer Prime Rib Takeout. Wishing everyone a fantastic summer and we look forward to seeing you on our patios soon.

    Retail Report

    Dear Shaughnessy Members,

We have now received our 2024 Dormie Headcover collection and it is truly  a work of art. If you are in need of new headcovers to give your bag a refresh, now is the time. Dormie is an industry leader in the custom headcover department and is proudly Canadian. Dormie only uses the highest quality of leather in their custom golf head covers, carefully selected for its durability, strength, and softness. Each headcover is hand-stitched with care, ensuring that the leather will protect your clubs and last for many rounds of golf to come. We have created some unique designs with a high attention to detail. Some of the most intricate designs are our signature 17th hole cover as well as a custom-built land, earth, and sky headcover, which includes a call out to each with a wavy stripe in each colour. We have seven different colorways in each, and they all come in driver, fairway, hybrid, mallet, and blade sizes, while quantities last.

In the golf club world, we are entering into summer launch season with a couple of hot new products becoming available for order over the next couple weeks. Titleist debuted their newest driver at the US Open at Pinehurst. Members will see an opportunity to get fit for the new Metalwood line on July 20th at our Titleist Fitting Day. Please contact the Golf Shop to book your appointment.

In the short game world, Callaway will be releasing their newest line called Opus wedges. These wedges have been in development for over 18 months on tour, with prototypes being used by Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, & Akshay Bhatia. “(The Opus wedge) was code named ‘S6’ during the process,” Sean Toulon said. “We stamped every wedge out here (on the PGA TOUR) in this shape with S6, and that basically just stands for some of the shaping designs we went through. That was the sixth shape design that we settled on based on what the player feedback was. That’s really the whole story behind this wedge: TOUR-inspired, TOUR-driven. These guys out here designed this wedge. This is just the final cosmetic and final design that we went with.”

I personally tried one out last week that saw spin numbers that I haven’t found from any wedge before and it has a shape that looks very organic when placing the face behind the ball at address. The Opus wedges are available for pre-order later this month and we will have a custom program as well that will allow you to custom stamp them and place different custom-coloured ferrules in them as well.
