Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello members,

Congratulations to Brandan Price on his 5th Gold Cup win and first since 2007. Glad to see his name back on the hardware.

Brandan, who is known for his friendly “Hey Buddy!”, wished to thank Andrew Hart, Ashley Zibrik, and the entire Golf Shop team for putting on a first-class event. He also wanted to thank Tim Wilson for the club fitting and instruction. Sounds like Tim’s rates just went up!

Good luck to all participants in Season-Long Club Championship Match Play brackets, including Mixed, Fourball, Cufflinks, Dr. Fahrni/Father Son, Mixed, Legends, Super-Senior, and Senior. With all of the matches and tournaments underway, please contribute to the condition of the course by fixing your ball marks and replacing divots. No one wants to lose a match by having to hit out of a divot or over a ball mark, so please respect the course!

Also a reminder to all golfers who want to play in competitive club events to post your scores. Golf is a game of honesty and integrity, let’s keep it that way.

Please also note the following key dates:

The Vintage is on Thursday, June 22nd – please click here to register.

The Member-Member is on Friday, July 14th – stay tuned for more event details and the opening of registration.

Please click here to see our full calendar of events.

Lastly, we have been seeing a spike in verbal cell phone communication by members on the course, driving range and in the Clubhouse common areas. Please be reminded that this is only permitted in the parking lot and phone booths.

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

A quick look at what happened in May… For Opening Day, we saw  just short of 100 ladies anxious to see where their game was and excited to reconnect with old friends while meeting new ones. It was a wonderful day to start the season!

The Team program is thriving with over 20 members. We play with a Shaughnessy pal against strangers on courses we don’t always know, which helps to increase our heart rates and truly challenge our nerves. It always ends with a lunch where the strangers become new friends.

The month ended with the Austin Taylor qualifier for the season-long match play. Upon every shot,  we learned a new appreciation for how hard golf really is. Plus, we needed to keep up with the pace of play, making it a real mental and physical challenge – exactly why we love this game so much. The progress of this season-long match play will be put up on the bulletin board in the Ladies’ Locker Room. Of course, during the month, the casual golfers witnessed our stress levels climb during all of this competitive nonsense and wondered why we do it. There is nothing more exhilarating to me than having tons of pressure on you and then pulling off a shot. Our golf program truly offers something for everyone.

Please note that for all Tuesday events, there is a lunch following play, usually in the Garden Lounge. I look forward to seeing you there!

Looking ahead, we see a perennial favourite event – the Solheim Cup on Tuesday, June 20th. Be sure to register for a very fun day with lunch to follow. Please click here to register for the Solheim Cup.

Also, at the end of June, is the Senior Club Championship on Tuesday, June 27th. Please click here to register for the Senior Club Championship.

A group of Shaughnessy ladies are off to the BC Senior Championship at Christina Lake and we wish them good luck and happy times together. Fun will be had by all.

There is also a group of 16 ladies going to play Cordova Bay and then a competition against the Victoria Golf Club ladies for the annual Victoria Exchange. Ashley and Michelle will be joining them and they will be on the team competing against the Victoria Club pros. Did I already say “fun will be had by all”?

Keep checking the bulletin board for clinics and events that may interest you. Please click here to see our full calendar of events.

Finally, the Women’s Charity Golf Tournament is on Friday, July 21st, so please invite your guest(s) and sign up for either the scramble or play your own ball in a team format. In June, the Charity Committee will be soliciting support for Kate Booth House and Covenant House. When approached, please reflect on what a difference our Club can make to struggling women and children in our community. Please click here to donate.  For silent auction donations, please click here.

If you have any suggestions or ideas on how we can improve the program, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

We are just over two months away from hosting an LPGA Tour event at our club and I hope everyone can start chipping in as much as possible on the course with the following two things, as every little effort will help!

  1. Repairing divots – please use the sand and seed bottles and fill any unfilled divots you find when playing.
  2. Repairing ball marks – while waiting for your turn to putt, take a moment to fix a ball mark or two.

The golf course has quickly turned up a notch and we are now finding ourselves playing in true Shaughnessy fashion with lightning-fast, firm greens and healthy, penalizing rough. Season-long matches have already begun, and we wish everyone the best of luck!

I would like to congratulate all 101 players who teed it up at Gold Cup this past weekend, with a nod to Brandan Price for taking it home as well as his impressive play over the two days totalling even par. Our Professional Staff would also like to acknowledge Angela Zhang as the first female competitor to ever play in Gold Cup with her +2.6 index!

Please click here to view the final results and prizing of Gold Cup.

I also want to recognize the 16 qualifiers listed below for the Austin Taylor Cup this season. There will sure be some exciting matches ahead!

Demo Day is on Saturday, June 17th from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. We will have our team of Professionals as well as our Brand Reps on the practice facilities to assist you. TrackMan Range will come in very handy when you are testing out new clubs, as you will be able to compare distances easily. Come try out new gear from Callaway, XXIO, PXG, Titleist, TaylorMade, Ping, Honma, and Theragun. Registration is not required and there is no cost to participate.
