Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Now that we are into June, I thought you might be interested in our rounds of golf data through the end of May.

  • 2024 Jan to end of May = 12,638
  • 2023 Comparison = 13,339
  • 2022 Comparison = 14,376
  • 2021 Comparison = 20,895

As the data indicates, we continue to see a general trend downwards from peak-pandemic times. We expect the tee sheet to get busier this month if the warmer weather decides to arrive and stick around for a while. We have some great events lined up this month, so be sure to check the club calendar and register online or via the Golf Shop. A reminder that when signing up for events you will receive a confirmation email that you are registered from Golf Genius, which is our tournament software. This email can sometimes end up in your junk mail. If you don’t receive a confirmation email, please give us a call in the Golf Shop so that we can ensure that you are registered and solve any issues you have with receiving the confirmation emails.

For our bigger events, it is not uncommon that we run out of power carts for participants. We have a fleet of 30 power carts at Shaughnessy, which can accommodate a maximum of 60 players. Please be sure to register for a power cart when signing up for an event to avoid any disappointment on the day of play if there are no more available.

Please note that for member events with a shotgun start, the tee sheet is adjusted to accommodate. On June 15th for The Talon, play will only be available starting at 6:00 PM off the first tee for non-event-playing members and guests.

One final friendly reminder: please remember to post your scores after your rounds if you wish to compete in our events. We have just completed our first handicap audits of the season to ensure all competitors are complying with our 80% minimum posting policy. Thanks in advance for your cooperation on this matter and we look forward to a great rest of June!

Respectfully submitted,

Men’s Golf Captain’s Report

Hello fellow members,

The season is in full swing! I wanted to send a big congratulations to Forrest Van Alstine on winning Gold Cup for the first time. Forrest, who currently plays on the UBC golf team, has won the Junior Championship 5 times at the club and I look forward to seeing many more wins from him.

Good luck to all participants in Season-Long Club Championship Match Play brackets, including Mixed, Fourball, Cufflinks, Dr. Fahrni Father/Son, Legends, Super-Senior, and Senior. With all of the matches and tournaments underway, please remember to post your scores to ensure you are eligible to compete in this year’s events. If you have any questions regarding posting requirements, please feel free to reach out to me or the Golf Shop staff.

A reminder to the membership to take pride in our course and contribute to the condition of it by fixing your ball marks and replacing divots. No one wants to lose a match by having to hit out of a divot or over a ball mark, so please respect the course!

We have our inaugural debut of The Talon (member/member) event coming up on June 15th which I am extremely excited about. I am happy to report that we only have a few spots left, so if you are interested in playing (and you should be), find yourself a partner and click here for registration.

After the Talon, our next major event is the Vintage on June 27th followed by the Member/Guest to be held on July 12th. Please ensure that you sign up well in advance, as these events may become oversubscribed. Please click here to register for the Vintage. Please click here to register for the Member/Guest.

For all other events, please click here for the full Men’s Events Calendar.

A big thank you to Ashley, Bryan and Brandon for doing an amazing job with Men’s Nights so far this year. With warmer and dryer weather on the horizon, I look forward to seeing you all out on Wednesday nights for some patio and fire pit time.

I look forward to continuing to see those of you that I know and, of course, to meeting any of the members that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for any golf-related matter.

Women’s Golf Captain’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

We experienced variable weather in May, but, fortunately, we had more sunny days than rain.

Even after 74 years, the Cookie 2-Ball event remains popular. Many thanks to Mary Jean, Cookie’s daughter, for presenting the trophy to the event’s winners, Agnes Stewart and Cindy Waller. We also greatly appreciate Mary Jean’s generosity in sponsoring the wine and cookies for the event.

Agnes and Cindy could only team up for the event because their original partners withdrew before the game. Their victory shows us that success might happen beyond our plans. You might be the next winner if you break out of your usual group. I want to remind everyone that participants can always sign up for the games individually (not just as a group).

The Shaughnessy ladies played the first Team game on a beautiful day on May 14th. Playing against young, low-handicap ladies from the opposing teams was a big challenge, but some Shaughnessy ladies had outstanding performances. All team results are kept in the “2024 Shaughnessy Team” binder in the Ladies’ Locker Room for your reference.  Go Shaughnessy Team, go!

Due to poor weather on May 21st, the Beatrice Evans and Victoria Exchange qualifiers had to be cancelled. The first 16 ladies registered qualified to play the Victoria Exchange on June 18th. The Beatrice Evans qualifier has been rescheduled to Monday, June 10th. It is also the first round of the 2-Day Eclectic.

A complimentary BBQ lunch will follow play of the second round of the 2-Day Eclectic on June 11th. All Tuesday golfers, including competitors, casual players, and 9-holers, are welcome to join us for the lunch.

Shaughnessy hosted the second round of the Zone 3 and 4 Amateur/Senior Championship on May 28th. A few Shaughnessy ladies competed for the trophy in the rain.

I am looking forward to the upcoming games in June. We have five major games in June:

June 4th
Team Games and Casual Golf

June 10th & 11th
2-Day Eclectic
Beatrice Evans Qualifier on the Monday
Casual Golf on the Tuesday

June 18th
Victoria Exchange and Casual Golf.
Please click here to register for Casual Golf.

June 25th
Grans & Non-Grans and Casual Golf
Please click here to register.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Golf Committee had its 5th meeting on May 30th. Please review the minutes posted in the locker room. I would like to highlight the new criteria for the seasonal most improved and eclectic competitions.

Seasonal Most Improved Criteria

To receive the Most Improved Golfer Award, the recipient must have played at least five (5) events sponsored by the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club’s Women’s Golf Committee from Opening to Closing Days. The events must be played according to the Rules of Golf and posted to Golf Canada (a scramble event, which cannot be posted, will not be considered one of the five eligible events). The award is based on the greatest percentage of improvement using the Golf Canada Handicap Index, not solely the number of strokes. All scores posted to Golf Canada during the active season, whether played at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club or not, are included in the Index. – Approved by the Women’s Golf Committee on February 8th.

Seasonal Eclectic

To be eligible to participate in the Seasonal Eclectic Competition, a player must have played at least five (5) events sponsored by the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club’s Women’s Golf Committee from Opening to Closing Days. The events must be played at Shaughnessy from the Red Tees, according to the Rules of Golf, be a full 18 holes, and be posted to Golf Canada (a scramble event, which cannot be posted, will not be considered one of the five eligible events). The results of the Eclectic Competition will be computed by the Golf Shop. At the end of the golfing season, prizes will be awarded for the best eclectic rounds of golf, both gross and net. – Approved by the Women’s Golf Committee on May 30th.

Please participate in the two seasonal long games above and keep your handicap current and accurate. Instructions on how to participate in the seasonal eclectic are posted on the bulletin board in the Ladies’ Locker Room.

As the weather gets warmer in June, please protect yourself by applying sunscreen and drinking more water. Be a smart golfer!

Enjoy the sunshine in June.

    Retail Report

    Dear Shaughnessy members,

I would like to bring to your attention our upcoming Sweet Spot Golf Club Trade-In Event on June 17th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. This is a great opportunity for you to get some old clubs out of your bag and garage and turn them into valuable golf shop credit. The representative from Sweet Spot will be on-site for two hours to accept your old clubs and will appraise them on-site for a trade-in value that will be applied as Golf Shop Credit. This can be used to purchase some new clubs or anything else you may see in the currently fully-stocked Shaughnessy Golf Shop.

Another upcoming event is my Fit Day Friday on June 21st at the main putting green where I will be stationed from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM with all there is to offer in new putter technology and I will have a Trackman to test your current putter with. A lot of people fail to realize how much a properly fitted putter plus new technology can help lower scores on the greens at Shaughnessy. All golfers, even the best Tour players in the world, miss the centre of the face from time to time. When you lose speed relative to a centre hit, the ball doesn’t roll as far as you intended, so you miss more putts or leave them farther from the hole.
