GM’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Despite the recent weather, Spring is almost upon us, and with the upcoming change to daylight savings time, we will start seeing extra sunlight late in the day which I am sure will allow all of you to better enjoy the Club.

At the forefront recently, the tennis club championships recently concluded with two weeks of outstanding competition. It was a historic event, as Ms. Carol Lau became a Club Champion for the 12th time, adding to her record of the most singles club championships won by any member. We also saw Mr. Josh Zhang become the men’s singles tennis club champion for the first time, adding to his two club championships in golf. He becomes the first member in the club’s history to win club championships in both golf and tennis – an incredible accomplishment. A special thank you to Jerome, Ichiko and the rest of the team as well as the Tennis Committee for all of their efforts. Please refer to Jerome’s report for a more detailed list of the event results.

As we gear up for the golf season, we are excited that the golf calendars of events for both men and women are now available. Please refer to the Captains’ Reports for more information on upcoming events.

In addition to tennis and golf, I would like to take a moment to officially welcome Viktoria Weiler as our new People and HR Leader. Viktoria comes to Shaughnessy with several years of HR Generalist and leadership experience. As we continue to strive to provide exceptional experiences for members, we look forward to having Viktoria help make Shaughnessy a better place to work.

Finally, please mark your calendars for the upcoming Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023. Materials will be available to the membership in early April and all members are invited to attend.

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello fellow members,

I’ve been looking at the past March Green reports and noticed a lot of talk about warmer weather and spring-like conditions. Unfortunately, as I write this, Shaughnessy is under a blanket of snow, and I understand that it has been challenging to get a tee time. I have been thinking about putting forward a recommendation to the Board about a ‘sister club’ in California, but I realized that half of our membership is already there! Perhaps I could suggest that the SGCC Snowbirds reach out to the “Mudders” with an invite once in a while…

Now back to business:

Our Handicap Committee will be meeting soon to discuss the upcoming posting season, which is just around the corner. It will be expected that members who wish to play in Club events have a ‘current’ handicap and have posted all of their scores. A friendly reminder for those who are down south to post your scores as well.

The 2023 Men’s Golf Season Overview has been emailed out, so please mark the important dates down early. Please click here to view the 2023 Men’s Golf Season Overview. Our first event of the year is the Cold Duck [Member + Guest] on Friday, March 31st. Registration opened on March 3rd; please sign up through the Club Calendar. This will be our only member-guest event this year, so start thinking about who your lucky guest will be. I hope to see you all there!

Note: This report was not written by Chat GPT… I am a real person… So, please feel free to reach out with any suggestions that will enhance our Shaughnessy experience.

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

February was a quiet month, but there was a lot of work behind the scenes as we prepare for the start of the season. I am going to highlight a few of the events that are being worked on.

It’s Shaughnessy’s turn to go to Victoria Golf Club for our annual exchange event. Rooms have been secured at the Oak Bay Hotel for the event on June 13th. How do you qualify? Any time between May 16th and May 30th. Go into the Golf Shop prior to your round and let the staff know that you are hoping to qualify for the Victoria Exchange. Ask one of your playing partners to be your marker and hand in your scorecard to the Golf Shop at the end of your round. The 16 best net scores will qualify along with the Captain and Vice-Captain. The team will be announced on May 31st, along with lodging and travel details. Thank you Michelle Yuan for your efforts here.

We are in full planning mode for the Charity Event, as well as identifying a second charity for the event. On April 7th, you will receive an email with an opportunity to participate in a survey which will allow you to provide your top two preferred charities for support for the second charity. After Board approval, the winning charity will be announced at the Spring Meeting at 2:00 PM on April 18th. Also, a decision has been made to offer the option of playing a scramble or your own ball at the Charity event on July 21st. Thank you, Teri, and to your committee.

Only one month to go until April 5th and our opening mixed event – Masters Par 3.

The 2023 Ladies’ Day and Business Women Calendars have been emailed out, so please mark your calendar with your favourite events. Please click here to view the 2023 Ladies’ Day Calendar. Please click here to view the 2023 Business Women Calendar.

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I hope everyone is enjoying a fantastic start to 2023, and I am sure that we are all excited that the golf season is right around the corner.

Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in popularity of electric push carts. Unfortunately, our electric push cart storage in the Back Shop area has reached its maximum capacity, and we currently have a waitlist for storage. I would like to be honest and say it is unlikely that new spots will become available this season. If you currently have a spot for electric push cart storage and feel that you are not utilizing it frequently enough, we kindly ask that you consider relinquishing your spot to a member on the waitlist. By doing so, you will be helping another member enjoy the convenience of having their electric push cart stored at the Club. If you are interested in releasing your spot or have any questions regarding the waitlist, please feel free to reach out to me.

We will continue to look into options to accommodate more storage stalls, but, at this point, we are simply out of space. If you wish to rent an electric push cart, we do have two PowaKaddy electric push carts available for use. Our staff would be happy to help set you up on one of our rentals with sign up on the registration sheet in the Golf Shop.

A friendly reminder about our power cart, push cart and electric push cart policy:

Members and guests must obey signs and observe Golf Cart rules and regulations. Power carts, push carts and electric push carts must never be taken up to the apron area of any tee, bunker or penalty area. All types of Golf Carts must not be taken or placed between bunkers and greens. Power Carts must enter and exit the fairways using our green and white post system. In severe wet conditions, Power Carts may be instructed to remain on the cart paths and not travel onto the fairways.

Please take pride and do your part to obey the policy above, as we want our course to be in the best shape possible for our members and guests as well as when we host the LPGA Tour later this summer.

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I would love to say “welcome to spring”, but it seems mother nature has other things in mind. That being said, the Food & Beverage team are excited to kick off the season with some new and exciting programs.

For March, Shaughnessy’s impressive kitchen team has created fantastic features. Try Roasted Cauliflower and Halloumi salad. With subtle flavours of za’atar, cumin and turmeric and a diversity in texture, this salad is the perfect healthy choice for a light meal. We also have a Canadian-sourced Brome Lake Duck Leg Confit with beluga lentils, squash three ways, and finished with a rich foie gras jus. This feature entrée is like a warm hug on a snowy March day. Recommended wine pairing for both is Osoyoos Nk’Mip merlot; the fruit and body of the wine enhances the spice and richness in both dishes. Available by the glass or by the bottle. We have also brought back an ever-evolving menu of select and bin end wines, if merlot isn’t your thing.

If cocktails are more your mood… We are excited to launch a new Shaughnessy cocktail menu. Starting next week, you can enjoy some fun, golf-themed drinks curated especially for you, the members, by talented Bar Supervisor Nick Valka. With selections like the Tee-Thyme Martini, Fairway Finder Margarita and the Sand Trap Sour, there is a fun and delicious beverage for whatever your mood. Ask your server for more details and look out for more fun innovation to come from the bar team.

We are looking forward to the Halfway House opening near the end of the month, weather permitting. Until then, please visit Jack’s First Tee Lounge for grab-and-go options, as well as the Clubhouse for in-house dining. Members are still encouraged to make a reservation when dining, accepted up to 30 days in advance. Lastly, an online reservations system is being set up and we will provide more details on this very soon.

Retail Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I am thrilled to announce the success of the new Callaway Paradym line of clubs. This innovative series of clubs has been a major hit on the PGA Tour with 6 out of the 8 events this year being won with a Paradym Driver in the bag. The Paradym Driver has an industry-first 360 Carbon Chassis that eliminates titanium from the body, so engineers can push weight and stability to the limit. The 360 Carbon Chassis promotes unprecedented weight redistribution for maximized distance, with a Triaxial Carbon crown and Forged Carbon sole that are 44% lighter than a titanium chassis. This massive weight savings is repositioned both forward, which is designed to enhance ball speed, and toward the back of the clubhead, designed to increase forgiveness.

The company’s A.I.-designed Jailbreak System enhances stability for faster ball speeds, while an all-new A.I. face optimization enhances speed, launch, spin, and now downrange dispersion. Paradym is the first driver to utilize Callaway’s face cup technology. The face cup is paired with a powerful, forged titanium face, a combination that promotes high energy transfer to the ball.

Three models are available: Paradym is suited to a wide range of players, with Callaway’s best combination of distance, forgiveness, and adjustability. Paradym X is best suited for players who want exceptional forgiveness and a slight draw bias, and Paradym Triple Diamond is ideally suited for better players who want to work the ball.

We have plenty of demos to take out on the course for you to see the performance for yourself, with several members already having theirs on order from our last Fit Day. Our next Fit Day is scheduled for Friday, March 24th from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM; please contact the Golf Shop to schedule your booking or click here.

Be sure to check out all the other new arrivals in the Golf Shop from G/Fore, Peter Millar, Nivo, Footjoy and Nike! We look forward to making your shopping experience at Shaughnessy unforgettable!
