2023 Bruce Mitchell Volunteer of the Year Award

Shaughnessy members Cheryl E. Lee and Carolyn Naylor have been named co-recipients of the 2023 Bruce Mitchell Volunteer of the Year award by Golf Canada, a prestigious recognition of their dedication and service during the 2023 CPKC Women’s Open at the Club.

As leaders of the Player Services Committee, they ensured a memorable experience for players and caddies, coordinating with 54 billet families and managing a diverse team of volunteers.

Their efforts in providing a welcoming environment, complete with thoughtful amenities and efficient logistics, greatly contributed to the overall success of the event.

Congratulations to both on this remarkable achievement!

Frost Delay Policy

In the event of a frost delay, members will be notified via our Daily Lineup email (emailed to all members on the tee sheet). The Course Superintendent Andrew Hart will communicate the time that the Golf Course will reopen. Once the course reopens, priority on the tee will go to the group that has the next tee time booked. All golfers booked in earlier tee times will need to re-book a later tee time and will not have priority once the course reopens for play.

In frost delay situations, please understand and respect that the Course & Grounds crew requires time to assess and perform maintenance ahead of play.

The Course & Grounds crew is unable to perform any maintenance tasks before the frost lifts. Please anticipate that there will be a small buffer between the time that the team is able to start work and the first tee time.

GM’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

It is hard to believe that spring is just around the corner, and with the clocks turning forward on March 10th, that extra sunlight late in the day I’m sure will allow all of you to better enjoy the Club.

The Tennis Club Championships recently concluded with two weeks of outstanding competition. Ms. Carol Lau became a Club Champion for the 13th time, adding to her record of the most Singles Club Championships won by any member – proving consistent excellence at the highest level that we certainly shouldn’t take for granted. On the men’s side, Mr. Aaron Man won his first ever Singles Club Championship. A special thank you to Jerome, Ichiko and the rest of the team as well as the Tennis Committee for all of their efforts. Please refer to Jerome’s report for a complete list of all the winners and finalists from the event.

Registration is open for Shaughnessy’s traditional Easter brunch and dinner buffets. Each buffet will be accompanied by live piano music by Diane Froese, as well as Easter crafts, a balloon twister for the kids, and a special visit from the Easter Bunny! For more information and to make a reservation, please click here.

As we gear up for the golf season, a reminder that the golf calendar of events is now available and registration has opened in advance for many events. Please refer to the Captains’ Reports later on for more detailed information regarding upcoming events in the earlier part of spring.

I’d also like to announce that after three great years, Kerry Enzie, our Director of F&B recently moved on from the Club. On behalf of the entire team, I’d like to thank Kerry for all of his contributions to the Club during his tenure. With his help, the F&B team successfully navigated pandemic-related challenges and elevated many aspects of the F&B experience at the Club. In the interim, Executive Chef James Choi will assume Director of F&B responsibilities for the Club. We are in the midst of adding to our team as we enter the heart of our season and I know Chef James’ successes in leading and developing our kitchen team and the respect the entire team already has for him will help immensely as we transition.

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming AGM on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Materials will be available to the membership in early April and all members are invited to attend.

Please enjoy the last days of winter. We look forward to seeing all of you at the Club more often.

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

After many years of service to the Club and countless hours of volunteering his time, Gord Chan will be taking a step back from organizing men’s night at the Club. He will now be able to just enjoy himself out on the course and around the bonfire afterwards. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gord for donating so much of his time to ensuring the successful sponsorship of the men’s nights and the events themselves.

Taking over for Gord are a team of legends that need no introduction, Charles Gadalla and David Davies. I just wanted to say a big thank you both Charles and David and look forward to working with them this year. You should have already received a call from one of these gentlemen regarding sponsorships for men’s nights this upcoming season. If you are interested in sponsoring a night, please feel free to reach out to one of them at your earliest convenience.

As previously mentioned, a huge thank you to Ashley Zibrik and her team for getting the 2024 Men’s Golf Season Overview out so early this year. You should have already received the calendar in your email but if you haven’t, please click here to view and download it.

As communicated recently, the Cold Duck date has been changed to Friday, April 26th, please make sure you sign up for the event as it is a great way to kick off the season. If you are interested in playing, please click here for registration.

Please also note the following events with open registration:

Our first GAC meeting is scheduled for this month, and we will be discussing the remaining events as well as discussing with our Handicap Committee when it will be appropriate to start posting scores. It will be expected that members who wish to play in competitive Club events have a ‘current’ handicap and have posted all of their scores.

I look forward to continuing to see those of you that I know and, of course, to meeting any of the members that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for any golf-related matter.

Respectfully submitted,

Ron Emerson Jr.

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

As we catch sight of the delicate white blossoms on the side of the 18th tee box, the scent of spring fills the air, signaling the beginning of a new golf season. I am pleased to inform all our members that our Tuesday calendar and Business Women calendar have been finalized, and I would like to highlight some key points for your attention:

The Games:

Our season will run from April 2nd to October 15th, featuring 29 games on Tuesdays, a charity event on July 26th, and 23 Business Women games on Saturdays.

Participation:

Our games are designed to cater to players of all skill levels, which consists of event players, casual golfers, and 9-holers. You can play a game in whatever style you prefer.

Social Society:

While we do not aspire to play professionally, our tournaments provide a wonderful platform for building friendships, learning from experienced players, sharing personal stories, competing for prizes, and of course, being lucky for draw prizes.

Posting Your Scores:

For those competing in competitive events, maintaining a fair playing environment is essential. It’s imperative that we diligently post our scores and ensure our handicaps remain current and accurate.

Sign-Ups:

For competitive events, sign-up will be on an individual basis, and the Golf Shop will make the draw based on the competition. For casual games, you have the option to sign-up individually or as a group, but we encourage all players to mix up and meet new friends.

Love our Course:

Let’s do our job of keeping our golf course in excellent shape by repairing ball marks on the greens and filling divots on the fairways.

Member Input:

Your questions and concerns are important to us. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me and your committee members. Your feedback helps us continually improve our events.

The Women’s Golf Committee (WGC) convened two meetings, in January and February, with monthly meetings scheduled for every second Thursday of the month. I encourage all ladies to review the meeting minutes that are available in our locker room and stay informed about the WGC’s progress.

In 2024, our locker room bulletin board will serve as the primary information hub for golf-related updates. Please make it a habit to check it weekly if you’re unsure that you get complete information from other communication mediums.

As I worked on the calendar, I envisioned playing each game with both familiar faces and new friends. I eagerly anticipate seeing you all on Opening Day. Registration is now open, so take action and secure your spot today.

Additionally, please mark your calendar for the Masters Par 3 Tournament on April 10th, our Spring Meeting on April 11th, and the Rules Seminar on April 17th.

At this moment, we are planning the Road Trip on April 16th during Spring Aeration. More information will come soon.

    Retail Report

    Dear Shaughnessy members,

I’m thrilled to announce the return of a great Shaughnessy tradition, The Golf Shop Shoe Trade-In Event. With our footwear wall boasting over 15 new models, we want to make sure your footwear comfort is taken care of this season by offering 20% off any new in-stock pair of shoes with the trade-in of an old pair. We have offerings from FootJoy, Ecco, G/Fore, Nike, and the third-largest selling shoe company in the world, which is new to the shop for 2024: Skechers. It’s a great time of the year to shop for footwear as we have just received our stock, which means we have plenty of sizes to select from—including some wide options for this year.

It is an exciting time of the year in the Golf Shop as new products are coming in daily. Of note, we have recently seen deliveries from Peter Millar, Jack Wolfskin, Johnnie O, Swing Control, G/Fore, Daily, & Galvin Green.

Lastly, I want to highlight the upcoming Ladies’ Trunk Show happening at Ladies Opening Day where we will have product from a brand new company called ANEW available for special order. We will also have representatives from Swing Control, IbKul, Daily, Skechers, and Therabody. We have also just announced our annual spring golf club trade-in event where you can turn your old clubs that are sitting in the garage into valuable Golf Shop credit. This event will occur on March 28th from 10:00 AM until Noon, and it is best you are here in-person to have your clubs valued by Sweet Spot.
