General Manager’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

As we inch closer to summer and break away from what has seemed to be a never-ending winter, we have much to look forward to as we enter one of the busiest months of the year at the Club.

I would like to give recognition to Andrew Hart and the rest of the Course and Grounds Crew for making it through a wet spring aeration week. The course is in fantastic shape and ready for the season ahead.

Following the success of hosting traditional golf events in April, such as Cold Duck and Ladies’ Day Opening, we have a full slate of traditional events in May; please be sure to check the Club Calendar for additional details.

On the courts, we will be hosting the Tennis Club Championships from Monday, May 9th to Saturday, May 21st. We expect this to be held in traditional fashion, including hosting the closing dinner on Saturday, May 21st.

As many of you are aware, Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner sold out within hours and with a long waitlist. We decided to close down regular restaurant dining for the day on Sunday, May 8th, so that we can reallocate our resources to increase the capacity for these traditional events.

For our team, Monday, May 2nd, was a special day. We were finally able to bring back Mondays for restaurant dining for the first time since last September. Though we are excited about this, we are still in a fluid environment with respect to managing our labour resources, not only from a recruiting and retention perspective, but also from day-to-day fluctuations in staffing as we continue to prioritize a safe environment.

If you’ve come to dine with us recently, you’ve likely noticed many new faces in our front of house operations. Kerry and his team have done an excellent job in recruiting new staff members in a continuously challenging labour market. Please feel free to introduce yourself to any new team members and help them feel welcomed at the Club.

April was a very successful month for the Club, and we look forward to more “normalcy” in May. As always, our team is committed to ensuring the Shaughnessy Experience and continues to aspire to be the best of the best.

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello members,

Thank you to Chinami Hancock and all the volunteers who put together the rules seminar during aeration. It was very well attended, and judging by all the questions, well needed. As we all know, the more you learn about the rules of golf, the more you realize you don’t know. A big takeaway for me was to make sure you familiarize yourself with the local rules at Shaughnessy. I learned a few things that will definitely come in handy during a match.

As of April 30th, Summer Rules have officially started, which means that the start of our official golf and events season is upon us. Hopefully the weather will kick in as well! May is a busy month, with Fourball Qualifying, our first Men’s Night and Senior Mixer, and Men’s Opening Day. I am excited for the members to see the hard work of the staff and committees to have Shaughnessy at its best as we enter into the official 2022 season.

Please do your part on the course to enhance this hard work by taking care to replace divots, repair ball marks, and adhere to the directions on the course. This will be another incredibly busy year at the course, and we can all help to maintain the Shaughnessy experience.

Lastly, please remember to post your scores on the day of play. Maintaining a current and accurate handicap is a requirement to play in all competitive events this year.

Please note the following key dates in May:

  • Mixed Championship and Men’s Fourball Qualifying between Saturday, April 30th – Friday, May 13th
  • Men’s Opening Day – Saturday, May 14th – click here to register – you may sign up with a partner for this event
  • Legends Season-Long Matchplay Qualifying – Thursday, May 26th – click here to register

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear members,

The Spring Meeting and Opening Day were both very well attended. A special thanks to Ashley, Michelle, Zach and all the staff who put on a great opening event.

During the Spring Meeting, we talked about several important points, one of which is the Women’s Executive’s goal for this year. Following meetings with two focus groups of members, and after summarizing what we learned, the 2022 Executive has set our mantra to read: “we are inclusive and kind to one another, and, above all, we have a lot of fun!”

To that end, here is a summary of some of the steps we have taken:

  1. We invited casual ladies to have a voice at our table in a move to be more inclusive. Teri Christopher is our newest member of the Women’s Golf Committee, representing casual golfers.
  2. We will introduce a very special new event to honour our Chinese community. Our final big event this year will be the Moon Festival, which is celebrated at the end of harvest in Chinese culture. It is a time of family gathering, and the very rough description “One moon over all people”  – we think is consistent with our objectives.
  3. We have each made a personal commitment to invite members we don’t know yet to golf from time to time. Wouldn’t it be amazing if everyone proactively invited one or two members that they don’t already know to golf with them? What a positive community builder that would be!
  4. We have changed some of the draw guidelines for a few of our Tuesdays so that casual golfers and event golfers can finish at a similar time and then enjoy lunch with eachother.
  5. We have added some new events to the calendar in order to add some fresh fun to our Tuesday golf.
  6. We have each personally committed to engaging only in conversations that are positive and constructive.
  7. Opening Day was a mixed draw with casual and competitive golfers together in a fun scramble format.

Imagine the year 2032… we may be saying goodbye to this beautiful course that we have grown to love, not only for the physical beauty but for the amazing friendships that we have developed. Imagine if we could leave behind a culture that left all members (competitive, or casual, English speaking or English as a second language) feeling the same sense of belonging and inclusiveness and like we all have a kind, supportive community of women who are out here to enjoy this wonderful game!

Congratulations to the Opening Day winning team Diana Maughan, Tracy Zhang, Sally Lazaruk and Alice Wang, who captured first place with a 2 under 71!

By the time you read this newsletter, the May calendar will be in full swing. The Beatrice Evans Cup Qualifier on May 3rd also acted as the qualifier for the 50th Anniversary of the Victoria Exchange to be held at Shaughnessy on Tuesday, June 28th. In addition to the competitive side of the Exchange with Victoria, there will be room for casual players to participate. Watch for details to come.

We have two Team Interclub competitions in May (Tuesday, May 10th and Tuesday, May 24th). For those of you who are not playing Team on those days, sign up to play a fun, more casual game. May Ladies’ Day Tuesdays will finish with a four-club challenge to be played on Tuesday, May 31st. Which four clubs will you use? It’s a big decision, so be sure to plan carefully!

We start off June with one of our premier events of the season. The Ryder Cup, as we have called it since commencement, will now be called the Solheim Cup in keeping up with the PGA and LPGA. We have enhanced the event for 2022, so watch for added fun.

Andrew Hart and his team have done an outstanding job with aeration, leaving us with a course that is play-ready. Let’s make sure we do our part by filling divots on the fairways and repairing ball marks on the greens.

On Friday, July 8th we have our Women’s Charity Golf Tournament and Fundraiser in support of Kate Booth House. Registration will open on Friday, May 13th at 8:00 a.m.

Golf Report

Dear members,

Now that we’re able to welcome guests back to the Course, we have a few special events planned! I am one of 12 golf professionals lucky enough to be a part of the TaylorMade Advisory Board in Canada. In February, 2019, our group travelled to Carlsbad, California to tour the Kingdom, which is TaylorMade’s headquarters. During our trip, we had the privilege to spend time with Bill Price, who is their Senior Director of Putters and Wedges. Bill’s energy, enthusiasm and knowledge is mind-blowing, and he is full of good stories with seeing all the Tour players down south. We will be hosting a special day with Bill and Team TaylorMade on Friday, May 27th. Their team of fitters will work with each member individually for a custom putter fitting. Members will have a $250 credit towards the purchase of a TaylorMade putter or wedge. Spots are limited so sign up quickly! Please see the details below.

For my inaugural entry into The Green, I would like to bring to your attention some of the great new arrivals we have in the Golf Shop! With shipping delays being the new norm, we are happy to see boxes now being delivered daily from great brands such as J Lindeberg, Peak Performance, Swing Control, & Daily Sport. Please stop by when you have the opportunity; the Golf Shop team and I can walk you through some of our great new displays. We are running a promotion for Mother’s Day, which features 25% off clothing and 15% off shoes and accessories, so there is no better time to refresh your wardrobe to start the season. We are also running another promotion until the 8th of May on Theraguns to keep you feeling your best this season with industry-leading percussive massage therapy.

A new product we are carrying is Course Art Maps from Lie + Loft, which have done course drawings for courses such as Augusta, The Old Course and now your home course, Shaughnessy. We have some prints of your home track in stock for purchase, and we will be taking orders at a later date for different sizes and orientations to find the perfect fit for your office or home. Stay tuned to the weekly eNews for more information on ordering.

I look forward to meeting more of you throughout the season and having the opportunity to help provide you with everything you need throughout the season, whether that’s a new club fitting, finding the perfect outfit, or even a lesson to help get your game in shape.
