President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I hope all of you are enjoying the start of the spring season on our beautiful golf course and on the tennis courts. As we begin peak season at the Club, I reflect on recent events and the year ahead.

First and foremost, I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who participated in the Club’s 109th AGM. There were some great presentations and excellent questions from the membership. Your engagement truly adds to the spirit of our community. I want to extend a special thanks to our committee chairs and board members for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the smooth conduct of the meeting. In particular, I would like to thank Tom Whelan, David Hou, Ed Bukszar and Brian Mossop for their thorough and informative presentations.

Our first Men’s and Women’s golf events of the season are now concluded and were met with great enthusiasm and participation. This is a testament to the exceptional organization of our team and the active involvement of our membership. I want to express my gratitude to Ashley and her team and all those involved for coordinating these events and for their commitment to raising the bar and making our club events memorable experiences for all.

I am also delighted to see the significant improvements to our golf course, particularly the greens that had sustained damage over the winter months. The diligent effort of our course and grounds crew has not gone unnoticed, and I commend them for their dedication to maintaining the high standards of our course.

On a personal note, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Andrew Hart, our Course Superintendent, on the joyous occasion of the birth of his daughter.

Looking ahead, I am excited for the events that our team has planned for us. I know the Women’s Golf Committee is thrilled to continue the success of women’s golf from last year, whose events were sold out throughout the year. Ashley and her team are also excited to introduce a couple of new Men’s events, including both The Talon and the reintroduction of the Men’s Member/Guest tournament. I would like to thank our Men and Women’s golf captains, Ron Emerson Jr. and Michelle Yuan for donating their time and energy to ensuring our Club’s success. I would also like to thank David Davies and Charles Gadalla for taking on Men’s Night this year and congratulate them on sold-out sponsorship in record time.

Piril and the F&B team have a number of exceptional social events planned, including Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner (which sold out almost immediately) and the Summer Party which is becoming one of our most popular, can’t-miss, social events of the year. The tennis team and Jerome’s infectious energy will be felt at the One-Day Mixed Doubles Tournament at the end of this month, another event that always makes me envious and want to become a tennis player. Membership participation in events and all aspects of the Club is the key to our success and I encourage you to attend as many as you can.

I am also excited about Chef James’ recent additions to the menu, and I encourage you to use our food and beverage amenity, as it continues to be a vital component of our Club that thrives with your support and provides additional value for your membership. Sticking with the theme of participation, I would also encourage you to support our Golf Shop. The team is excited about new inventory that has now arrived and would be happy to assist you with your needs. They can also find and order anything that they do not have in store.

For those of you who were not able to attend the AGM and listen to the various presentations, you will have another opportunity to attend a question-and-answer period with me in the fall, providing an opportunity for further dialogue and engagement with our membership.

As we continue to navigate the year ahead, let’s remain united in our passion for this club and our shared love for golf and tennis. Together, we will uphold the traditions of excellence and camaraderie that define us as a community.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our club.

Respectfully submitted,

David Plunkett

Men’s Golf Captain’s Report

Hello fellow members,

Golf season has officially started!!! We kicked off this year with the warmest and driest Cold Duck that I can remember over the past couple of years. We had 116 players out for the event (up from last year) and the feedback from guests and members was incredibly positive.

A huge thank you to Andrew and his team for a successful aeration and getting the course ready for Cold Duck. I think we can all agree that Bryan and Ashley did an amazing job organizing the event details and Piril, Chef James and their F&B team knocked it out of the park after the round (having the screen up to watch the Canucks game was a nice touch).

With Spring Aeration successfully completed and Men’s Opening Day already behind us, a reminder that posting season has already started. Please ensure that you are posting your scores in accordance with the requirements outlined by the Handicap committee.

The next big events with registration open are:

Seniors/Super Seniors/Legends Qualifying – May 25th – click here to register.

Gold Cup – June 1st & 2nd – click here to register.

The Talon – June 15th – click here to register

Registration for the above events is now open; don’t forget to sign up early for these and other events this year. For all other events, please click here for the full Men’s Events Calendar.

This year, season-long brackets rules will be relatively the same as last year, but a reminder to please read your emails and the event details carefully to avoid any confusion.

I look forward to seeing everyone out this year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding any of our upcoming events.

Respectfully submitted,

Ron Emerson Jr.

Women’s Golf Captain’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

After Spring Aeration, our golf course is in excellent condition. Walking on the fairways feels like walking on carpet. Please remember to fill your divots on the fairways and repair ball marks on the greens to help maintain the course’s pristine condition.

We had a great turnout for the first two Spring Tune-ups on April 2nd and 9th, with 20 ladies participating each time.

The Business Women games were a big hit in April, with 12 ladies playing each Saturday and registration filling up fast. Remember to sign up early for the upcoming Business Women games in May, as registration always closes on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM.

Our Spring Meeting was held on April 11th, with an excellent turnout of over 55 in attendance. The meeting covered a wide range of topics and was very engaging. Special thanks to the guest speakers from our two charities, Kate Booth House and Covenant House, as well as Mr. Brian Mossop for his captivating report.

On April 16th, 20 ladies enjoyed the Road Trip, competing on a sunny and windy day. Team Kathy emerged victorious over Team Michelle by 14 points. Well done, Team Kathy! The day concluded with a delightful dinner at Britannia Brewing in Delta.

Our first major event – Ladies’ Opening Day – with the theme “Springtime in Paris” and Trunk Show on April 23rd was a great success with 88 participants. Many thanks to Joan Norrington, Susan Russell, Linda Thorstad, Danièle Balit, and Caroline Fung for their work in making our Opening Day so special, Ashley and her team for organizing the tournament and Trunk Show, as well as to Piril and her team for helping with the room set up and coordination of an outstanding buffet prepared by Chef James and his staff.

Exciting news! Our charity event scheduled for July 26th has already sold out thanks to the generosity of our members. Let’s continue past success in 2024 by supporting local women in need.

Looking ahead, here are the upcoming events for May:

May 7th: Cookie 2-Ball – Team up with a friend to play this traditional tournament and have a chance to win the lovely trophy in alternate shots format.

I would like to share the history of Cookie 2-ball with you here. This tournament was created by Mrs. Edna Cooke in 1950. Cookie, as she was affectionately known, was born in China. During WWII, she was evacuated to Australia and later settled in Canada. The lovely trophy, which she won for tennis while living in Jakarta, was in a small trunk of her possessions which eventually reached her in Canada. With the loss of Cookie in 2008, her daughter, Mary Jean Otway-Ruthven has taken over as host of this event. I hope that we can plan a special event to celebrate its 75th anniversary next year.

May 14th: First Team game – We still need players, so please sign up if you’re eligible.

May 21st: Beatrice Evans and Victoria Exchange qualifiers – Don’t miss your chance to play in these qualifiers. Please click here to register.

Casual games for casual golfers and 9-holers continue every Tuesday, and Business Women events are held every Saturday.

Shaughnessy will host the second round of the Zone 3 and 4 Sr./Am. Championship on May 28th. Please register on Zone 4’s website if you want to play in this tournament.

Active season started on April 27th, so don’t forget to post your scores. We are now using Golf Canada’s new score posting system. Please review the posting rules right beside the locker room computer.

Please click here to download the 2024 Women’s Golf Calendar. Please click here to download the 2024 Business Women Golf Calendar.

Enjoy the sunny days of May on the golf course. I look forward to playing a round with you soon.

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Now that we are into May, we anticipate seeing an increase in rounds of golf. As you continue to enjoy our beautiful course, it is important to uphold the principles of courtesy and consideration for your fellow members.

I would like to kindly request your cooperation in a simple but significant matter: if you find yourself unable to attend your scheduled tee time, please take a moment to cancel it. If you need to cancel, please be sure to amend your tee time through the reservation system or the Golf Shop as soon as you are aware of any changes.

By doing so, you allow other members and their invited guests the opportunity to fill that slot and enjoy the course. This small act of consideration ensures that everyone can make the most of their membership and promotes a positive atmosphere within our club.

A friendly reminder that our Guest Cancellation Policy is as follows:

Members will be responsible for green fee charges of guests, accompanied or unaccompanied, who do not arrive for their reserved tee time.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and thank you for your understanding.
