Frost Delay Policy

In the event of a frost delay, members will be notified via our Daily Lineup email. The Course Superintendent Andrew Hart will communicate at what time the Golf Course will reopen. Once the course reopens, priority on the tee will go to the group that has the next tee time booked. All golfers booked in earlier times will have to re-book a later tee time and will not have priority once the course reopens for play.

The Wednesday Evening Men’s Chicago Bridge Group

This group has been playing Chicago Bridge in the Men’s Card Room on Wednesday evenings for about 35 years, and they are looking for a few more gentlemen to join them. Members in this group range in age from low 70s to our oldest member at 100. Here is a message from the group:

“We have a variety of abilities, but we do play the basic conventions: Weak 2s, Strong 2s (NT and Clubs), Stayman, Transfers, Blackwood and Gerber, although some of us need to be reminded occasionally! We are a very forgiving group of bridge players, and although we do keep score and have winners and losers each week (an average amount is about $2.50!), we tend to forgive a renege, especially if it doesn’t affect the score. A gentle reminder suffices!

We play from mid-September to the second Wednesday in December. We start again once the club reopens after the holidays and play until around the time Men’s Night Golf starts. A parallel group of ladies, mostly wives of the men, play at the same time.”

Anyone interested in joining this fun group is asked to email Don Potvin at donald.potvin@shaw.ca, C.C. to Peter Scott at peter26@telus.net.

President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

As 2021 draws to a close, I would like to thank the membership for another fantastic year, despite the numerous difficulties we faced due to the ongoing pandemic. Last year in my first address to you all as Club President, many projects and initiatives were just beginning to get underway, and have seen success throughout the year.

2021 Successes

In September, the Club officially recognized the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This is just one aspect of our efforts to honour and respect xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) People, here on their territory; our Musqueam Recognition Committee and management will continue to review, consider, and collaborate on additional initiatives with the relevant parties at Musqueam.

A huge “thank-you” goes out to all members who have completed the GGA Shaughnessy survey so far; at last check earlier this week, we were at a 65% completion rate! This survey will be an excellent tool for management and the Board to organize member feedback and appropriately prioritize projects, and enact policies and initiatives.

In the interest of preserving access to the tee, very few new golf members were introduced to the Club over the last year. I am so happy to report that incidences of member misconduct have been on a downturn the last several months; ensuring we have a safe and respectful environment for both members and staff is of the utmost importance.

Holiday Season

As I’m sure many of you are aware and despite the best efforts of our team, we continue to face labour shortages in food and beverage. Similar to September, when we prioritized traditional Club events over a la carte dining, we will be implementing some a la carte closures in food & beverage in order to execute some of our special holiday events. Our Christmas offerings this year will be a wonderful combination of our Shaughnessy favourites, with some special updates from our stellar food & beverage team. A big thank you goes out to Kerry, Chef James, Piril, Rebecca and the rest of the F&B team for committing so much extra time and effort over the past few months and for their commitment to executing a robust Christmas event schedule.

For more information on Christmas at Shaughnessy, see Kerry’s report in this Green.

Going Forward

As we move towards the holiday season, rounds played are finally beginning to level off; however, just recently, we had a Saturday with frost delay that resulted in nearly half of ballots not being able to play 18 holes. The Board and management continue to monitor the access to the tee as we enter the winter season and in preparation for key policy decisions such as new member intake and guest policies that will inform our finances. As the golf season has come to a close and general business levels have dropped, expect that many of our staff will be taking some well-deserved time off; on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our whole Shaughnessy staff (#TeamShaughnessy) for their hard work, adaptability, and teamwork over the past year.

This year, we said a last “thank you” to Dr. Barb Werry and Ms. Valerie Lambert, two of our Board members who have served since 2015. With Barb chairing Membership and Val chairing Finance, both members contributed innumerable hours of service to not only the Board, but their respective committees and subcommittees during some of the most challenging times for the Club. When you see Barb and Val at the Club, please thank them for their service.

We are also excited to welcome Mrs. Diana Maughan and Mrs. Lynette Cooper onto the Board. Diana has returned to the Board for the third “tour of duty”; as a former Membership Committee Chair, former Women’s Golf Captain, and longtime member of several other committees, Diana brings a wealth of experience to the Board table. Lynette, as former Women’s Captain for both Golf and Tennis, was instrumental in the recent Locker Room Project and continues to be actively involved in the House and Tennis committees. Both members will be excellent additions to our Board, and we thank them for their time and commitment to our Club.

In addition, I would like to acknowledge our incoming captains for 2022:

  • Fraser McKeen, Men’s Golf Captain
  • Carolyn Naylor, Women’s Golf Captain
  • Paul Crawford, Men’s Tennis Captain
  • Mulien King, Women’s Tennis Captain

A huge thank you to our outgoing Golf Captains Mr. Sean Crowther and Mrs. Susan Russell, and thanks to Paul and Mulien for staying on another year. I would also like to take this time to acknowledge Mr. Tom Whelan as our incoming Finance Chair and Club Treasurer. Additional committee chairs and members will be selected throughout November.

I am honoured to serve another year as your Club President, with the support of Vice-President David Plunkett, Past-President Chris Walwyn and the rest of the Board of Directors. I hope you and your families all have a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season, with best wishes for an even better 2022 ahead.

Respectfully submitted,

Gord Chan

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

What an incredible Shaughnessy summer season experienced by all.

Now, with rainy season officially in our daily forecast, and our sunsets coming earlier, we have transitioned from the Halfway House to Jack’s First Tee Lounge for self-serve grab-and-go options.

We are grateful that in the 2021 holiday season, we can once again gather with our family and friends, not just our ‘core-bubble’ as we did in 2020. We are excited to announce that our December Calendar will include classic events, such as two nights of Chef James’ Chef’s Feast, Christmas Lunch Buffets, Christmas Dinner Buffets, and a dedicated weekend for our traditional Santa Parties. At this time, we are only sharing the dates of the events. You can expect a full Christmas Guide including pricing in your inbox on Wednesday, November 10th. Tuesday, November 16th will be the official day to start booking your holiday brunches, lunches, dinners, and everything in-between. Once registration opens, we encourage reserving as soon as possible, as many of these events will fill up quickly. Regular dining reservations of up to 10 people that are outside of our Christmas events can be made up to five (5) days in advance by calling the Host Stand at 604-264-5249.

Chef’s Feasts (plated dinners) – December 11th & 12th

Christmas Lunch Buffets – December 15th, 16th & 17th

Santa Parties (brunch and dinner buffets)- December 18th & 19th

Christmas Dinner Buffets – December 22nd & 23rd

On behalf of our Culinary and Service Team, we look forward to hosting you over the holiday festivities.

Ladies’ Charity 2021

We are very pleased to announce that support of Kate Booth House through our Shaughnessy women’s fundraising efforts this year has raised over $250,000 to date!

Surpassing our goals was made possible with the help of our entire membership, staff and friends who once again proved their commitment to this worthy cause.

Our fundraising efforts will continue, as Danica Imports has once again donated items that will be assembled into gift packages and offered in time for Christmas gift-giving. These bundles will be showcased at the Club on Wednesday, December 1st from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. in the Cypress room. All proceeds go directly to Kate Booth House. Please contact Kelly Barber at kelly.barber@shaw.ca or Jane Macgregor at janemacgregor29@gmail.com for more information on these gift packages.

Thank you all for your yearly enthusiasm and support of our special friends at Kate Booth House.
