MEMBER NOTICES

In Memoriam

We regret to announce the recent passing of Mr. Hugh A. Magee on Monday, October 31st, 2022. Mr. Magee was a member of the Club since July 1st, 1989.

Upcoming Clubhouse Locker Rooms Temporary Closure

There will be a temporary closure of the Clubhouse Locker Rooms from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM on Monday, November 7th.

Shaughnessy will be welcoming approximately 100 senior leaders from private clubs across Canada as part of a club tour. The tour will take place from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM on Monday, November 7th. In order to facilitate this segment of the tour, the men’s and women’s locker rooms in the Clubhouse will be closed to members during this time.

Please note that during the closure, the Tennis Centre locker rooms will be available for use by all members, if required.

Frost Delay Policy
In the event of a frost delay, members will be notified via our Daily Lineup email (emailed to all members on the tee sheet). The Course Superintendent Andrew Hart will communicate the time that the Golf Course will reopen. Once the course reopens, priority on the tee will go to the group that has the next tee time booked. All golfers booked in earlier tee times will need to re-book a later tee time and will not have priority once the course reopens for play.

President’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Thank you for the opportunity to be your President for the past two years. As quickly as my term as your President began, it has now officially drawn to a close. In my first President’s Note to the membership, I wore my heart on my sleeve and wrote my version of Jerry Maguire’s “The Things We Think and Do Not Say.” The Note had its fans and critics, it was applauded by my presidential counterparts at other clubs across Canada, but jeered by some long-time Shaughnessy members. Like it or not, the Note served its purpose: to signal things are changing at Shaughnessy. We, as a Club, have accomplished a great deal in the past two years: improved our relationship with the Musqueam First Nation, completed the Membership Survey, set forth the continuation of the Course Management Program, established new standards for membership at Shaughnessy, enforced the Code of Conduct Policy, and improved member support of Food & Beverage, the Golf Shop and the Tennis Shop.

With respect to the Shaughnessy Experience, it’s the goal of every president and board to “leave things better than you found them” – I believe we have done this and then some. It’s important that members be proud of their club – I certainly am. It’s important that our members have some swagger – I certainly do. After all, we are the club that all other clubs in Western Canada measure themselves against. Yes, things are that much better here! Many of you have been asking if we’ve reached “Peak Shaughnessy” yet. With all this, we can still get better. Future boards must always be trying to make things better for the membership. When we become happy with the status quo, that’s when we risk falling into mediocrity.

GIVING THANKS
Thank you to all those who served on the Board as Directors during my time. Ed Bukszar, Lynette Cooper, Margo Dobbin, Brian Fulton, Gord Horsman, David Hou, Valerie Lambert, Diana Maughan, David Plunkett, Chris Walwyn, Barb Werry and Tom Whelan. Thank you for the discussion, debate, compromise and accord.

Thank you to all the committee chairs and committee members who contributed their valuable experience and time to making the Club better, particularly during the challenging environment the pandemic has given us. In the past two years, we had some of the best captains in Club history serve, thanks again to Sean Crowther (Men’s Golf Captain – 2021), Susan Russell (Women’s Golf Captain – 2021), Fraser McKeen (Men’s Golf Captain – 2022), Carolyn Naylor (Women’s Golf Captain – 2022), Paul Crawford (Men’s Tennis Captain – 2021/2022) and Mulien King (Women’s Tennis Captain – 2021/2022).

Thank you to Brian Mossop, our General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. Together with his senior management team and staff, for leading and overseeing all aspects of the Club’s operations during one of the toughest periods in the Club’s history. One of the things you learn to appreciate more when you’re on the Board, and even more so as President, is how important our administrative staff is to the success of the Club. A special thank you to Harvey Dykes, Director of Finance and Facilities, and Fatima De La Torre, Executive Assistant, who have worked tirelessly on behalf of members during the past two years.

Thank you to Ashley Zibrik, Director of Golf, and her Golf Shop team, Michael Thompson, Vaughn Marshall, Chris Ward, Carson Kallis, Zach Pichor, Bryan Lichimo, Michelle Waters, Branden Stewart and Tim Wilson. We are lucky to have one of the top Directors of Golf in Canada calling Shaughnessy home.

Thank you to Andrew Hart, Course Superintendent, and his Assistant Superintendents, Mathew Hamilton and Jeremy Atkins, and the rest of the course crew. The quality and playability of our championship golf course has stood tall under Andrew’s watch. Arguably, the golf course is our most important asset; future Boards must stay committed to ensuring maintenance of the course to the highest possible standards is never compromised.

Thank you to Jerome Fournier, Director of Tennis, and his staff, Ichiko Shiiya, Teresa Dobson-Wahl, Dave Curry, and Kamil Pajkowski, for running one of the most successful tennis programs in Western Canada.

A big thank you goes out to Kerry Enzie, Director of Food & Beverage; Executive Chef James Choi; Piril Erbakan, Club Event Manager; Rebecca Rilling, Front of House Operations Manager; and the rest of the F&B team for committing so much time and effort to navigating through a challenging macro-environment over the past few years while ensuring the Shaughnessy Experience in Food & Beverage.

There are many others to thank, particularly those that have been with us for a long time who aren’t necessarily managers but are critical to our success and your experience. They know our names, know how many children we have, know what we like, and what we don’t like. Grace, Jovi, Flo, Gerry, Joseph, Avelina, Connie and Rene come to mind, but there are also many others that work behind the scenes that are integral to ensuring the Shaughnessy Experience for all.

THE $6 MILLION LEGACY FOR BC CHILDREN’S HEALTH
Shaughnessy will host the 2023 CP Women’s Open (CPWO), and members should be proud to provide a platform for charitable contributions within the Lower Mainland. Despite the CPWO being postponed at Shaughnessy in 2020 and 2021, CP still agreed to make a significant charitable contribution of more than $2.8 million to support equipment purchases and research at BC Children’s Hospital. While CP has yet to select a local charity for the 2023 CPWO, we anticipate their continued support for children’s health in our community.

YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to announce David Plunkett as the Club’s next President. David has served on several committees and has been an absolute pleasure to work side-by-side with over the past several years. I have no doubt that he will strive to continue to uphold Shaughnessy standards or, better yet, take them to the next level.

Respectfully submitted,

Gord Chan

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I am certain that we all are grateful for the extended summer weather we experienced in September and October. But now, as we enter the month of November, it’s official: winter is here.

We had some successful events in October, including our sold-out Thanksgiving Sunday with a record attendance of 210 members and guests, and our outgoing Club President Mr. Gord Chan’s President’s Dinner, which was well-received and well-attended by 110 members and guests. A sincere thank you to all the members who continually support the Club through these special events!

As we inch towards the colder season, please be reminded that Jack’s First Tee Lounge is open for self-serve soup, chili, and other grab-and-go options for those dedicated winter golfers and indoor tennis enthusiasts.

The Food & Beverage Department recently announced the addition of our two new Supervisors – Andrea and Anders. With more exciting news, Nick Valka, has joined the team as our Bar Supervisor as of November 1st. Nick brings over ten years of experience in restaurants, covering every facet of front-of-house. His extensive knowledge of the craft beer and wine industry rounds out our team; we look forward to taking the Shaughnessy bar program to the next level.
