Fitness Centre Update

The Shaughnessy staff and trainers would like to thank you for your patience and understanding over the past two and a half years as we implemented protocols in the Fitness Centre with the best interests of health and safety in mind.

Changes Starting Saturday, October 8th

Reservations for using the Fitness Centre will no longer be required.

Over the coming months, the Fitness Centre configuration will be adjusted and more equipment will be added.

A kind reminder to sanitize and wipe the fitness equipment, including mats and free weights, before and after use. As well, please return all equipment to its original location, if applicable. With no reservation system in place, there will no longer be set times for Shaughnessy staff to wipe down the equipment. Housekeeping will do regular room cleaning during the day and keep sanitizing bottles and towel supplies full.

GM’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

While I can say it certainly doesn’t happen each year, it’s nice for members to be able to still wear shorts and short sleeves during the month of October. It’s always a bonus to be able to play golf and outdoor tennis this time of year. We’ve had a fantastic stretch of good weather so far this fall which hopefully will continue.

Course aeration was once again very successful. Kudos to Andrew Hart and his team for planning and flawlessly executing an intense aeration program. While the course team went 110% during aeration week, many of our other departments such as golf shop and golf services, food and beverage and clubhouse were able to take a somewhat brief but well-deserved break after a fantastic but busy summer season.

On Monday, October 3rd, we held our annual staff golf event for the first time in three years. We had over 100 team members attend one or both of golf and dinner – nearly a 50% increase vs. 2019. Thank you to the members and the Board for providing this opportunity for our team members to experience Shaughnessy together, for an afternoon.

A big thank you and congratulations go out to the charity committee of Mrs. Jane Macgregor, Ms. Leslie Cliff, Mrs. Penny Crosby, Mrs. Diane Fulton and Ms. Carolyn Naylor and to all those who donated and contributed; the final tally donated to Kate Booth House was $173,302.

As we prepare to welcome the best players in the world to Shaughnessy for the 2023 CP Women’s Open, August 21st-27th, 2023, a reminder that the early bird registration price for Shaughnessy members has been extended through November 1st. Please click here to register now and use the code SGCC2023! (exclamation point included).

Finally, I’d like to thank President Gord Chan, who will be completing his last month of service as our Club President this month. Beyond the excellent work he has done leading the Board and Club over the past two years during the pandemic, I wanted to acknowledge and recognize how well respected he is from the employee side, particularly as a positive and selfless leader. Stay tuned for a final President’s note from Mr. Chan that will come next week.

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

This fall weather has been amazing so far, and we feel very grateful for an extended golf season! Happy early Thanksgiving to you and your families; we will be celebrating on-course on Monday, October 10th with a fun Thanksgiving event. Any group on the tee sheet is welcome to play a 4-ball – 2 best net competition and hand in your scorecard to the Golf Shop! If you are a twosome or a threesome, you are still eligible to participate. We will have prizes awarded to the top five teams of the day. Don’t forget to putt out if your score is going to count towards your team!

We are starting to see cooler temperatures overnight, which means sooner or later we will see some frost on course. Please see below for a reminder of our frost delay policy.

In the event of a frost delay, members will be notified via our Daily Lineup email. The Course Superintendent Andrew Hart will communicate at what time the Golf Course will reopen. Once the course reopens, priority on the tee will go to the group that has the next tee time booked. All golfers booked in earlier tee times will need to re-book a later tee time and will not have priority once the course reopens for play.

A special thank you from the Professional Staff to our 2022 Captains for this season (Men’s Captain Fraser McKeen and Women’s Captain Carolyn Naylor) who were an absolute pleasure to work with. They both dedicated a ton of time and energy to our Men’s and Women’s programs, and we were lucky to have them volunteer this season!

Wishing everyone a wonderful rest of this beautiful October!

Food & Beverage Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

What a month it has been so far in terms of weather. I hope everyone has had a chance to enjoy the October sunshine. For those who were quick enough to make a reservation, we look forward to hosting you and your family/friends at Thanksgiving Dinner this Sunday, October 9th. Please note that with all upcoming reservations, spots fill up quickly, especially with reduced patio seating as the weather inevitably turns.

It’s with great pleasure that I introduce two amazing leaders to our Food & Beverage Team.

Andrea De la Parra (left) is a multi-faceted professional with a wealth of experience in customer service and sales. She has worked in several restaurants in both Mexico and Canada, giving her a unique perspective on the hospitality industry. She’s driven by a desire to create connections and engagement – two things that are essential to the Shaughnessy Experience.

Anders Yuen (right) brings over 15 years of experience in food and hospitality. He is a learned professional with unmatched experiences in the industry working banquet event functions at hotels as well as fine dining restaurants. Anders also has previous private club experience, including being part of the opening team of the Bistro at the Arbutus Club. Anders’ hospitality passion is centred around creating memorable member experiences by supporting and leading our Food & Beverage service team members to their own excellence.

We are thrilled to have Andrea and Anders as Food & Beverage Supervisors in our department and look forward to their contributions.

On a personal note, I look forward to Anders’ Green Bay Packers and Rebecca Rilling’s New York Jets go head-to-head on October 16th.
