General Manager’s Report

 Dear Shaughnessy members,

With the CPKC Women’s Open fully behind us, the focus for our team in September was on welcoming back our members to the Club and providing exceptional hospitality, service and memorable experiences. September is always filled with the biggest events of the year for golf on both the Men’s and Women’s side and signifies the start of the tennis season with Tennis Opening Day. Member usage was very high in all areas of the Club and for the most part, the weather cooperated and gave us a nice extension to the end of the summer.

A special thank you to Andrew Hart and the course team for their exceptional work during the aeration week that took place from September 18th-22nd. The team was blessed with warm, sunny weather for most of the week, aiding both the aeration process and the healing of all play surfaces. After a rigorous Spring aeration, we opted for solid tines on all shortgrass surfaces this fall. A whopping 450 tons of sand was applied to the golf course. Additionally, verti-cutting was performed in the rough to improve playability, other than some temporary discoloration and thinning that may occur in the short-term.

I’d like to take a moment to remind all members of our member code of conduct. It’s crucial to show respect to our staff, who are asked to enforce board-approved Club rules and policies. It is also important to note that the Club is dedicated to promoting an inclusive and diverse environment and in line with this, appropriate and respectful behaviour should be used in all interactions. For a refresher on the code of conduct and the most up-to-date club rules, please click the respective buttons below.

With the weather starting to turn, I know many of you will start heading down south soon and I wanted to wish you a fantastic rest of the year. For those who are staying in town, we look forward to seeing you at the Club soon.

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop
General Manager and Chief Operating Officer

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

Let’s start by stating the obvious and that the rainy season has arrived and summer already feels like a distant memory.

But let’s reminisce for a minute about what a fantastic end to the summer season we had with Round Up and Men’s Night finale. It all started with a new 18-hole format on Friday with alternate shot and best ball which ended with 10 two-man teams coming down the 18th hole in a horserace. There were cheers and jeers as “crowd favorite” Leo Wong sunk a short par putt to win in front of a big crowd. The day was a perfect warm-up for the main event, but the curse of winning Friday would shatter Leo’s hopes of a 2-day victory. Saturday arrived with perfect weather and when Mike Murphy woke up that morning, he had no idea that he would be playing that day or be winning a green jacket. It was a Cinderella story he couldn’t have dreamed of. A big congratulations to Mike on winning Round Up 2023 and his team Neel Sinha, Jorge Denegri, and recent Men’s Club Champion Andy Robb (who now has two green jackets but couldn’t find any to wear that night?).

It was certainly a busy summer golf season and an even busier week as the following Wednesday we had Men’s Night finale and stuffed our bellies even more with oysters, martinis, and a steak + lobster dinner. Thank you to Craig, Franco, and all the Men’s Night sponsors for making Wednesdays the highlight of our weeks. It was a golf season to remember!

Lastly, in event news, I would like to acknowledge our Board of Directors for retaining the interclub trophy against our rival and friends at Capilano Golf Club. It was a hard-fought battle on away turf, but luckily yours truly was able to fill in last minute and make a 35-footer on 18 to sneak out a tie for Shaughnessy. Can’t say I didn’t do anything this year.

Note, that as we turn to post-aeration golf, we are still playing the ball down and entering scores (as of writing). However, keep an eye out for notices for when we move to winter rules and play off the synthetic mats on the driving range. A kind reminder to snowbirds and golf trippers that rounds played down south still require you to enter your scores. We will be performing random audits with the help of customs officials this winter and any suspected violators may need to invite our investigators for a round.

All kidding aside, I would like to truly thank our membership for participating in this year’s events and adding value to the Shaughnessy experience. The strength of this club is the people who comprise it and the shared commitment we have. I am proud to call Shaughnessy my “home club” and to have served as your Men’s Captain. It has been a pleasure.

For anyone interested in participating on the GAC committee next year please reach out to me or Ashley.

Keep calm and golf on.

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

The month of September was very memorable with the Moon Festival as the highlight. We were entertained by our very own Katie Wang who sang beautiful songs for us. It was a terrific day that ended with great entertainment and an outstanding meal – thank you chef James. Ashley and Michelle Waters again put the puck in the net by running the team building horse race event – it was a very fun event indeed.

September also saw the Capilano exchange at our course where we definitely benefitted from the home course advantage.  These annual exchanges with Capilano and Victoria were in full swing this year and it was a surprise to me to witness how special these exchanges are.  I highly recommend everyone to participate in these events next season – it was so exciting to meet and play with the women from the other clubs.

October is our final month, and still, we have a roster of events lined up this year. On Tuesday, October 10th, we have a 1:00 pm shotgun with a dinner to follow – our final dinner together. The Two-Day Eclectic event is on Monday, October 16th and Tuesday, 17th – on the Tuesday, you get to use the lowest score from the two days as your final score.  We are also hosting The Drive Challenge on Tuesday, October 24th – an event where Marine Drive, Point Grey and Shaughnessy all come together and play good golf.

Finally, I hope to see you all at our last event, the Annual Ladies’ Fall Meeting on Monday, October 30th at 4:00 pm. Stay tuned for more details.

Since this is my final Captain’s report, I must tell everyone that it’s been a wonderful experience to be your Captain for the season.  I have had so much fun getting to know many people so much better.  Everyone had shown incredible support throughout the season which I sincerely appreciate – thank you.

Respectfully submitted.
