Course Aeration – September 20th-24th, 2021

After a season that set records for the number of rounds played and brought extreme weather, course aeration has been moved ahead of schedule one week to Monday, September 20th to Friday, September 24th. This will allow the Course Crew to perform much-needed work while maximizing late summer-early fall temperatures for recovery. This will also assist in prolonging the golf season later into the fall as compared to our initial dates.

During this week, the Driving Range, Golf Shop, Halfway House, Restaurants and Bar, and Golf Course will be closed. A Back Shop attendant will only be available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from Monday, September 20th to Friday, September 24th.

Please note that indoor and outdoor tennis will remain open during this entire period.

President/GM Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

We would like to thank all members that participated in the survey focus groups last month. In partnership with GGA Partners, we are currently working on developing a survey that will look to gain a better understanding of current satisfaction and experiences at the Club, and with the help from insights from the focus groups, develop additional questions related to key aspirations. We expect to have the survey ready to be launched by the end of this month and we look forward to the eventual results.

As we announced last week, we have planned full and partial restaurants and bar closures during the month of September. In a nutshell, we have been running short on labour in both front-of-house and back-of-house for most of the summer and, recently, we experienced additional unexpected turnover in the department which forced our hand.

Key priorities for Food and Beverage this month include:

  • Ensuring the retention of current F&B staff by providing better work/life balance.
  • Continuing to allocate our resources to attracting new employees to our F&B department while considering creative options in a fluid labour environment.
  • Executing our numerous traditional club events that have not occurred or have not been the same over the past two years such as Men’s Night Finale, Ladies’ Charity, Round Up, The Vintage, Tennis Opening Day, etc.
  • Ensuring that service quality meets Shaughnessy standards.

Though it was very difficult to choose certain days and times for F&B closures, we relied heavily on analyzing and interpreting data and usage patterns to help us make better-informed decisions, while also taking into account full-time and part-time staff availability. We will continue to do this going forward and work to make appropriate changes to operating hours, if needed.

Lastly, we would like to thank all members for their cooperation and willingness to adapt to pandemic-related protocols over the past 18 months. A new Provincial Health Order (PHO) is expected following Labour Day weekend which will include vaccination requirements in order to access many events, services and businesses. Shortly following the release and review of more details related to proof of vaccination administration, we will reach out to the membership with final protocols and accessibility considerations.

Be well and be safe,

Gord Chan

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello fellow members,

August was a month filled with anticipation for Club Championship weekend, and it did not disappoint.

A very big congratulations to all of the participants and a round of applause for the champions. It was a very special day for the golfers and it was nice to see all of the members who came out to support and enjoy the complimentary drinks and food.

Click here to view the winners of the day.

On August 26th, I had the opportunity to co-host the annual Past Captains’ Golf and Dinner with Women’s Golf Captain Susan Russell. Kerry and his team provided excellent service all evening and Chef James put together a fantastic dinner for all of us. In addition, you could really sense the tradition and pride with this special group and I look forward to “officially joining” this group of past captains moving forward. Thank you to all past captains for your contributions to our club.

Heading into the final events of the season, we hope to have excellent weather extending into fall and further.

Who will be wearing the green jackets come September 11th?

Until next time…

Respectfully submitted,

Sean Crowther

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Dear members,

As we head into Autumn, with the cooler mornings and shorter days, we wish to commend the course and grounds crew for maintaining a championship-quality standard throughout the season, in spite of extreme weather conditions and the record-breaking number of rounds played every month. When you see them on the course, please stop for a moment to say thank you—it’s appreciated.
