General Manager’s Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

It is wonderful to see members back at the Club, enjoying the course, outdoor tennis courts, and taking home Shaughnessy meals. The Board of Directors and our team have worked tirelessly over the last several weeks to ensure our re-opening is executed safely and effectively – thank you to all involved. It is quite clear at this point, that the course and courts have become a safe haven just as much as a place to play golf and tennis during these unprecedented times.

As our province cautiously re-opens, your management team continues to review all aspects of service and adjust protocols to best suit the membership’s needs while simultaneously guarding the safety of members and staff. We will be watching closely as federal, provincial and local health authority guidelines and restrictions are slowly eased and will continue to ensure the safety of our members and employees. Specifically in relation to our Food & Beverage department, we are working with our health and safety consultant to ensure the safety of members and staff; please stay tuned for more information regarding this adjusted return to service. Please continue to review the protocols on the Member Dashboard of the website here for the most up-to-date information. In these master protocol links on the Dashboard, recent minor changes will be highlighted and major changes will be initially communicated by e-blast and highlighted. In addition to these links on the Member Dashboard, all of our protocol updates are automatically linked to other forms of club communications including the self-declaration form and reservation confirmation emails.

While socializing at the Club cannot continue in a traditional manner at this time, we are working to find ways to keep those social connections strong during this time. We will be conducting our AGM via Zoom – join us online for an important annual gathering of the membership on June 15th, more information to follow. Our social media channels will continue to feature new content from your golf, tennis, and culinary professionals. Check out the posts, share with your fellow members, and leave your comments.

While the Administrative Office is still closed to the membership, some of our Administrative staff continue to work remotely and are best accessible by email to assist you. For accounting questions, please email membersar@shaughnessy.org. If you are not receiving Club emails, and you do not see them going to your spam folder, please email our Communications and Marketing Coordinator Adam Markus at amarkus@shaughnessy.org – he will be happy to help you out. As always, if you have any general questions or concerns, please contact reception@shaughnessy.org. We are committed to responding to your questions and concerns within twenty-four hours.

Wishing you all the best, and looking forward to seeing all of you soon,

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Mossop

Men’s Golf Captain Report

Hello members,

To quote the great band Foreigner, “it feels like the first time, it feels like the very first time…” driving through the gates rolling my window down to smell the fresh air, seeing golfers coming up the 1st fairway and getting an idea of the pin location on the first green, I could hear it playing in my head as I came to play my first round after the shutdown.

I’ve heard lots of comments about how people feel being back playing golf at Shaughnessy, from: “I can’t believe how much I missed this place”; “I can play golf at other courses but it’s not Shaughnessy”; to “sure makes you wonder what we’re going to do if Shaughnessy is no longer”.

We’re fortunate to have the opportunity once again to remember and appreciate what sets Shaughnessy apart. Each time we drive through those gates is a chance to escape the outside worries and just go for a walk.

I would like to send a big thank you to Ashley Zibrik and her professional staff for all their hard work, preparing us so we’re all moving in the right direction and providing the Shaughnessy Experience to the best of their capabilities.

Thank you to Andrew Hart and his team for having the course in tremendous shape (just wait until those tightly-mown areas grow in – start practicing tight lie chips off of your hardwood floors), not to mention Bernard Ting and all of his Back Shop staff for having us set each day as we head to the first tee.

As we navigate these changes to the golfing experience at Shaughnessy, please respect our fellow members and show up on time to the first tee, play ready golf, keep carts around bunkers, replace your divots, smooth bunkers and repair pitch marks on the greens.

Our tee sheet is packed each day so let’s do our best to keep rounds to four hours or less, and keep the course healthy and pristine for what we expect to be a very busy golf season.

Your Golf Activities Committee will be working hard to see what we can do to make 2020 the best possible golf season we can. Gold Cup is still on for May 30th and 31st – stay tuned for more details to come via e-blast over the next weeks.

See you on the fairways.

Women’s Golf Captain Report

Hello everyone! Welcome back to golf.

We hope that you continue to stay safe and healthy. We are very excited to announce the first event of the season will be Tuesday, May 26th, Ladies Opening Day. Following our current guidelines, this event will consist of golf with draws and prizes, including a beautiful Titleist wedge offered by Ashley. Registration will be available online shortly through the member’s calendar. You always have the option to call the Golf Shop for registration. As expected, our original calendar has been interrupted until further notice. The Ladies golf program is not cancelled; we will be announcing new events as new measures are implemented. All Interclub games for Ladies and Business Women are postponed to next season.

Due to these extraordinary times and in the best interests of our community, we are cancelling the golf portion of our 34th Annual Women’s Charity Tournament. However, the Committee has been working hard finding ways to continue our fundraising efforts to support Kate Booth House. In collaboration with the Salvation Army, an online donation website for Shaughnessy members has been set up. Please refer to the information below for access to this site. More than ever, our help is needed. Your contribution makes a difference. We will continue to keep you posted on our progress. For any questions on the Women’s Charity for this year, please reach Kelly Barber at kelly.barber@shaw.ca.

Also, congratulations to Kelly Barber for her hole in one on #3 on May 4th, 2020.

Tennis Report

Dear members,

It has been so nice to see many of you back at the Club over the past few days. For many of you without travel and work, the courts have become a place of refuge as much as a place to play tennis. The safety of our staff and our members is of utmost importance; we will continue to monitor the current health situation and modify our protocols accordingly.

To book a court, please call/text 236-878-4320. Please note: the Outdoor Courts are subject to weather and availability; we will do our best to make you aware of any delays while the Indoor Courts are closed. We plan to re-open our Indoor Courts on May 23rd. Lastly, please review the items below before your initial visit to the Club.

Please click here to view a Tennis Protocols and Procedures Summary Video.

Please click here to review and complete your self-declaration form – this must be completed prior to visiting the Club.

Golf Report

Dear Shaughnessy members,

I hope you are enjoying your return to golf! The conditions on-course are excellent and it has been so nice to see everyone back out at the Club.

We are the first club in Canada to have a premium golf ball for our driving range – the TaylorMade TP5, the only golf ball with five-layer technology and a speed layer system to produce more ball speed. It was unfortunate to hear that a few of our brand-new range balls were found on course since we have re-opened. Our new range balls say “PRACTICE” on them to indicate that they are only to be used on our practice facilities. Using these practice balls on-course is therefore a violation of Club policy and is likely to result in disciplinary action.

Temporary Pace of Play

During this unprecedented time, the Board of Directors has approved a temporary pace of play policy of four hours and five minutes. It is also expected that groups playing in the early morning on weekends will set a pace of play of under four hours. Our Professional staff have been marshalling daily since our re-opening and monitoring times throughout the day. Below are some helpful tips:

  • Keep up with the group ahead, not ahead of the group behind
  • Try to get to your ball quickly so you have time to settle before your next stroke
  • Play the correct set of tees based on your distance
  • Play “ready golf!”

Thank you for your cooperation!

Clubhouse Report

It’s hard to believe that summer is only five weeks away. Shaughnessy’s Clubhouse team has been hard at work in our facilities and in the kitchen. We’re all looking forward to the day we re-open our doors.

The Clubhouse team has had their plates full completing projects with vacant facilities and the ability to accelerate project timelines. Our Maintenance team has also focused on the Tennis Centre, where roof patching, light replacement and an entire paving and resurfacing of the courts has taken place. The First Tee Lounge – now known as “Jack’s First Tee Lounge” – has been completed. For those of you who have golfed recently, you have likely seen the new washroom facilities as well as the new locker room space for our Junior Members. Banquet spaces are receiving much needed “TLC”, and there have been skylight replacements throughout the Clubhouse. The repaving of the driveway and front circle all are being completed while traffic on-site is limited. We’re excited for you to see these improvements.

In the kitchen, our team has prepped a Take-Out Food Service for our membership including minimal-prep meals, raw groceries, as well as options from the wine cellar and beer fridge. Please consider us for your next meal! We are highly encouraging our members to keep their eyes on these items as we continue to rotate menus and offerings. While it is difficult to anticipate all the changes that will ensue in the coming weeks as our country begins to reopen, one thing we’re certain of is that restaurants, banquets and events may look the most different upon your return. There are many ideas being investigated as to how restaurants and food and beverage will operate, and it is important to note that each restaurant will operate differently. What’s most important is to remember that the parameters in which we are able to deliver service will have both the members’ safety and safety of our staff as the top priorities. Our management team is busy developing different models and plans in order to ensure our facilities will be operating under proper recommendations and guidelines in accordance with Vancouver Coastal Health and the Club’s health and safety consultant.

Mother’s Day is coming this weekend and, while it may look a little different this year, we hope to help our members celebrate with a special take-home Mother’s Day Bundle. This delicious take-home brunch features some special gifts for Mom as well – to order, please click here.

The Shaughnessy Clubhouse and F&B team is looking forward to welcoming you back to your home away from home, of course, when safe to do so. Until then, enjoy the golf, enjoy the tennis, and let’s be thankful we’re trending in the right direction.

Respectfully submitted,

Dear Shaughnessy members,

With the reopening of the course, we hope you all are safely enjoying the return to golf. Golf has never been busier, and the Shaughnessy staff continue to keep the course in top playing condition.

Some of you have been following updates from Golf Canada and the LPGA Tour, and seen some events unfortunately cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. In light of the recent announcements from the provincial government regarding opening phases, we continue to work with Golf Canada, CP and the LPGA Tour along with our team of volunteers to prepare for a world-class event at the Club.

The 2020 CP Women’s Open remains on the revised LPGA Tour schedule, set for August 31st – September 6th. Together with our partners, we will continue to monitor the recommendations and guidelines of government and health experts to assess any related impact to the event. Golf Canada will provide regular status updates to the Club including any onsite precautionary protocols or safety measures being implemented. The health and safety of the athletes, volunteers and everyone who supports the CP Women’s Open – and our community as a whole – will always come first.

If you are interested in helping to prepare our Club for this landmark event August 30th to September 6th, we would love to have you join our team of volunteers. Please click here to visit the CP Women’s Open website to register as a volunteer.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact open@shaughnessy.org.

With kind regards,
